I bought this at a gunshow at least 13 years ago. If you can read the writing thru the shrink wrap, are these a "go no-go" type shell for the Winchester factory? Isn't it odd that it would be in a two piece cardboard box? The .338WM cartridge shown is what the seller told me was inside. The other photo will show one of two holes drilled into the body of the case. Probably to show it is inert? Have anyone seen something like this before? Mule Deer? Here is the a photo of the headstamp.

The drilled hole is one way to show it's an inert round - I have old 45 acp and 30-06 SPRG dummy rounds made up the same way.

Bigwhoop,
They are not go no- go gages. They are used to safely funtion through the action testing feeding, extraction and ejection.

Headache, thanks, yes as suspected. I would assume that these modified cartridges would be only used at the Winchester factory? They would be an important part of the final inspection before boxing and shipping. Or were they available to gunsmiths too? Also, its funny they would have a box of 20 instead of just a few to keep on hand. I wonder if there were two piece boxes still prevalent back in the late 50's? Just trying to unravel a little curiosity.
