Great story CF. My grandfather was one of the first Ford mechanics in Waupaca,WI and would tell us stories of how folks delt with cars and winter. Many drained the radiators and put the car up on blocks for the winter then switched back to horses and sleighs.

Those that drove their cars would usually remove the battery and take it in the house. Radiators were often drained too as the antifreeze was alcohol based and wasn't that great. Need the car, reinstall everything, put a pan of coal or burning wood under the oil pan and wait. Then hope you could get it to start.

I have one of those outdoor thermometers that records the lowest temp until you reset it. Going in to this cold snap, it said -25 was our low. Now? Why it still says -25. So according to my backyard thermometer, this was NOT the coldest it has been this year. the weather on my phone said -27 was the low. all in all, not that bad really, a little overblown really. Plus, if you think we have it bad, just look north, others have it worse.

couple of possible answers I can think of to that riddle. First, one of your unlucky kids has an ear infection in both ears. Secondly, either you or the wife has an ear infection. In any case, I feel for your family as those are not fun to deal with. Especially when it involves little kids.

Twin boys, one has the infection in both ears, the other is only having trouble with his left ear. Our daughter has avoided it so far.

I had a 1986 Ford Ranger 4x4 w/2.9l V6 that was hell to start in the winter. One cold day, couldn't get it to jump start, pa pulled me around the block and I tried to start it in gear. No go there either. Finally he dug in the garage for some cardboard that didn't have paint on it and lit a small fire under it. After about 3-4 minutes, she started. I haven't had to try that since and hope I don't have to but it's good to know the tool. smile

Little off-topic, but any of you local (Twin Cities area) guys know of a good person/place to use to strip and paint cabinets for a kitchen? They are just finished wood right now, and she who must be obeyed wants them painted white.

My wife wants to sell our place, and I have two bathrooms to do work on before we can sell (tile work, etc...), so I am looking to have our cabinets painted, so I don't have to do it all myself.

Hmmmm, if he builds them, he has to either finish/paint 'em, or know who does. smile

Im not much into refinishing, but ,usually a good scuffing with sandpaper ,and you can paint over the old finish.
restrictions apply of course ,but a good paint store should be able to set you up.
if you want somebody to come over and do it,I can get some phone numbers for you.

Fluffster,

I have a railing, a couple actually, in my house that I want to paint. It has the wonderful hi-gloss finish everyone liked in the late 80's early 90's. Is a good sanding good enough on that or do I need to strip it? It could be a good excuse to buy a detail sander. grin

Hmmm, I may get back to you. the surfaces are all flat, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal if I take all the doors off and use a palm-sander. I just want the paint job to look pretty good when I'm done.

Would you use a brush, or a roller do you think?
