Lightweight rifle? What is the intended purpose? Do you maybe have a list of scopes you like?

What's your budget? If it's on the tight side a guy could do a whole lot worse that a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40, Natchez has them on close out for under $230 with Balistic X reticle... Weaver Grand Slam My .300 is wearing a 6x36 Leupold(soon to be a 6x42)...I like a good 6x as much as anything on a flat shooting rifle. If you go that route, would be hard to go wrong with a K6, FX-II, FX-3, Meopro....just a matter of how far you want to push the budget.

Then I stand by the Grand Slam...unless the budget is REALLY tight...Same place has a Weaver Classic V9 for $129.99, long as you don't twist knobs, it'll cover all that very nicely(good Japanese glass and tough as nails). K6 would be a touch brighter if you go fixed.

A $200 Burris on the low end. I've found a $300 VX-2 to be as much scope as I will ever need and the recent VX-1's ain't bad at all.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

For $300 or less I like VX2s, Weaver Classics, new VX1s, Revolutions.
I have beat the piss out of multiple V9 3-9x38s and never paid over $130 for one. Weavers track well, are tough, and light. Glass very good also.
However, on hard kickers or rifles where a lot of eye relief is needed, they are not the best option, unfortunately. The Leupys have much better eye relief/eyebox. Better than Burris also......

A Leupy 2.5-8x36 is small and has long eye relief.

On my favorite .300 I have a Leu. 4-12.. I love it.. Have had 3-9's, 6.5-20's, 12x's, and straight 6x.. But I use my stuff in pretty open country.. The .300 I used this fall had a 6.5-20 Leu. on it, but it is really set up as a long rg. rig..
