Winchester Partition Gold 12 ga slug 2 3/4" load... 385 gr to start and 376.2 gr as you see it. Deer was facing me at 50 yards it went in mid neck and I found it just under the skin of the hind quarter.. First slug I've ever recovered.

Would this be a good elk and bear load at that range?

I shot a large bodied upper 140s class buck in IA several year ago at around 120ish yards and the recovered bullet looked the same as your pic(same load 2-3/4" 385g PG). I hit the buck in the ham and it stopped in front of the off shoulder under the hide. Like you said, most of the time they punch through. These loads are good on any angle for deer.

Dropped a doe at 30 yards this season with a 3" partition gold 12 ga. Shoulder shot mass destruction. Didn't move again.
