depends on what you want to put on it.
same stuff but low gloss, just hand sand it , and brush it on.
some old finishes ,with certain paints, just scuff sand ( no power sand needed) and paint away.
Of course it depends, but normally stripping isn't needed.

Hmmm, I may get back to you. the surfaces are all flat, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal if I take all the doors off and use a palm-sander. I just want the paint job to look pretty good when I'm done.

Would you use a brush, or a roller do you think?

unless the old finish is in real bad shape, you probably don't need a power sander.Like I said in answer to tzones post, complete stripping isn't needed, unless you want to put a clear finish back on it,maybe not even then.
the right paint goes a long way,as does a painter who does that a lot.

Ive seen people tape thin plastic all around a room ceiling, spray paint the ceiling, and not disturb the room full of furniture, all before noon.

"Would you use a brush, or a roller do you think?"

of the choices given,a roller,but I wouldn't do either,if I had a choice, I would rather make new ones,and just finish,rather than re-finish.
but make no mistake,it is possible to do a first class refinish job.

you may be able to just use a sanding sponge, and scrub off the dirt.

I am only doing it so it looks "nice" when we sell it. I've already re-done the windows and trim. I don't want to install new cabinets to sell.

Now, if I have to re-do the cabinets at the new place, I'll talk to you.....

Hey,you asked my preference. grin

I would give the cabinets a good scrubbing with a few sanding sponges ,enough to remove all dirt and oxidation, and give them the best paint job you can.
make sure your paint is compatible with the old finish( most are) and your results should be great.

^^^^^ That is exactly what you want to do. Stripping can turn into a disaster if not done properly.

Wait....

Stripping....

Disaster....

Did White Bear actually say that out loud???? Oh my. This cold must have gotten to me.

All this brush/roller talk.

I cant help but think this could be handled with a moderate acetylene gas charge centered in a 3 gallon plastic bag of paint. Open the windows so they don't blow out. Put all the food away, take the wall calendar and clock down. Go outside and spark it off.

Boom!

Done.

Go fishing, you are a hero, you deserve it.

Your country thanks you.

I like the way.... I think.

The polar vortex has left the building. We we're minus 27* at 7:45 AM. We're up to zero now. 27 degree warm up in just 4 hours.

We now return to your regular program.
