G'day guys, I'm a bit excited. I finally tracked down what has to be one of the last new Ruger Africans in 9.3 available (in Australia anyway).

I put it on layby and should be picking it up in about 6 weeks. ;-)

Plan on feeding it 286gr either Winchester or Sellier & Bellot factory loads initially and go knock over some pigs.

Pics soon. ;-)

Cheers, Scott.

Congratulations on finding what ought to be a great hunting rifle.

Looking forward to the pics.

If there's such a thing as a sexy looking rifle, that's got to be it. You are going to love that cartridge too. It didn't take too long for it to become one of my favorites..

You won't be disappointed - I really like mine. They shoot great and have just enough heft to be gentle on the shoulder without being to cumbersome.

Thanks mate, so I take it from that statement that the std recoil pad is sufficient?

Cheers, Scott.

Congrats, mine likes 250 grain Accubonds over Mule Deer's almost max charge of RL-15.

I haven't felt the need to change it - I also have a CZ 550 Lux 9.3x62 with a thicker/softer pad and find the Ruger more comfortable to shoot.

Thanks for the info mate. I was looking at CZ's too, couldn't find one in 9.3 so I went with the Ruger. I did locate a particularly nice CZ Safari Classic in 375H&H though....

Maybe that'll be my next one. :-)

Cheers, Scott.

Did they stop making the Ruger African in 9.3?

Yep. Hasn't been listed for about 12 months now. I'd imagine 9.3 doesn't sell as well as the other cals the African is offered in?

9.3 is getting quiet popular here in Australia.

Cheers, Scott.

That was what my gunsmith recommended. I used mine for two or three years and finally sold it, as I found myself always hunting with the No.1-S in 9.3x74R and not the African. For my kind of elk hunting, the single-shot with a 22-inch barrel was a lot handier. YMMV.

Edited to add: If I have an opportunity to get one of the new Ruger 1-S offerings in 9.3x62, I will probably do so. The brass is a lot more available and that translates to a lot more affordable, if you do a lot of shooting.

Have to agree with you there - I also have a No. 1-S 9.3x74 and it's a joy to carry. I've yet to hunt with my African, probably for that reason wink I mainly bought the African because nice walnut makes me weak and do things I shouldn't:

Wow that wood is NICE!

Number 1's are pretty thin on the ground here at the moment... But I definitely see one in my future. A mate on another forum recently picked one up in 375 h&h. Reckons it's not as nice to shoot as his Ruger Safari in the same cal....

Might be able to talk him out of it one day....

Cheers, Scott.

+1, damn good advice. I'd do that even before taking the first shot.

Took some pics the other day while I was putting some more money on it.

obewan - only 9.3x62mm Ruger's producing now is a No. 1. Like you I just think the 9.3 bolt "African" just looks right. My stock is plain vanilla compared to your's however. I did change out the brick recoil pad Ruger uses for a 1 inch softer one. Makes it feel a lot like it's safe mate a CZ550 w/ kevlar stock (also in 9.3). BTW - check the Ruger web-site...they may still have the QR Alaskan Arms rings. They work just fine with Ruger's system. Homesteader

Homesteader, I've seen those ring and they look great, I'll definately be looking ok to that as I intend running it iron sighted with stints with a scope.

Cheers, Scott.
