I've got a 96, haven't touched the blower motor but my Haynes says it is mounted on the engine side of the fire wall.

Think you get to it from the vent you see at the bottom of the windshield. Goes across the whole bottom part of the exterior part of the glass. That vent.

Yeah, I did a search but what I found was quite vague.
But I'll try about.com

Are you sure the motor is bad? Seems a common problem is a resistor.

This might point you in the right direction.

According to my manual, its under the dash, behind the glove box. But check the resistor first its a common problem area.

The motor is starting to squeal. Figured it to be a bearing in the motor. But I will change the resistor too at the same time.
Thanks guys.

How long have you had this XJ?
One thing about any model XJ is a whole lot of stuff can be repaired by yourself.
When I used to buy these from the Feds, I would replace lots of stuff when I got it. Fan belts, hoses, all fluids, shocks, tires, etc.
I would go through the whole thing one time. Still have two of those bought from the Feds in family. Gave them to the kids.

I don't know if a '98 is like a '95 but I replaced mine two weeks ago. I had to take off the windshield washer container to gain access to it. It was real easy to do, except for the one flange on the firewall that was so close to one of the bolt heads that you can't get a socket on it. I bent it over after taking the motor/fan out. It made it a lot easier to put back in.

Don't believe everything you think.
