Mission accomplished!

Succesfully saved the world from various ground and rock dwelling vermin. Made a mad dash two day patrol of central Oregon with SU35 and came home a few thousand rounds of .22LR lighter and several dozen .22-250 and .264 cases of empty brass. Had an absolute blast and haven't had a rat shoot that good in a long time. Our first stop was at a rancher friend's place for rock chucks. Right out of the gate we spotted a monster chuck in the strangest place...the door way of an old homestead house...it then proceeded to disapear only to show itself again in the second floor window. He had a bead and the upper hand on us. Smart chuck. We ranged him, dropped bi-pods, worked bolts and dialed in yardage...........356 yards. SU had first honors, crack pow. Chucky still there and laughing. SU had second honors, crack pow. Hmmmm, still there. We found out later his rifle was shooting wayyyyyy high at 100. Once we got him dialed in thangs were dropping.

Our second day was spent shooting sage rats and we were in the honey-hole.....completly surrounded. Kept having flash backs of Nam, oh wait, wasn't in Nam, just one too many movies I guess. Not sure how many rounds we went through but there were empty 50 round 22lr little card board boxes all over the place. I discovered a new love, my left hand Remington 581 bolt action .22LR with an old 6x Weaver (got scope from John Barsness). The gun is whicked accurate out past 100 yards. I was having a blast playing Carlos and picking off rats with head shots. Man, was it fun.

The later part of day two was spent snipping monster rock chucks off an old rock wall. These things get pretty spooky so SU35 and I layed prone and waited for them to poke there heads up above a rock to peek out. We were ready and waiting. We both made some tremendous shots with very little target exposed. I shot one chuck that was the grand-daddy and must have weighed close to 10 pounds. All he gave me was head and neck and I slid one in using the 581 and Power Points. Knocked him cold.

Here's some pictures of the adventure, hopefully SU35 will post some as well.....

The happy hunting ground.

Just snipped a chuck at 275 yards using a .22-250. The chuck was hugging a rock thinking he was hidden.....not hidden well enough.

You know you're always welcome............it would have been worth the drive (or flight), too.

That was some serious big game shooting practice in two days. Shooting offhand and sitting are definately the toughest.

This was probably the best rat shoot I've ever been on. Non-stop shooting at its finest. The weather was perfect and the scenery was nothing short of Oregon spectacular.
I'm 2,000 rounds lighter than when I started and it could have been more save my thumbs giving out on me from loading those 30 round 10/22 mags.
We used mainly Winchester Power Points but I brought along a brick of some new Aguila 22 ammo. It's a 30 grain bullet backed by a little extra powder. Super fast and destructive but has one draw back it barks louder than a regular 22, more like a 22 magnum. Spike hates em! They are too loud.
Spike I promise not to bring them on any more rat hunts!

Here is a photo of Spike shooting offhand during a rat recce.

This next photo shows Spike in Chuck country. It was a good time for wringing out the 264 and its new M1 turret.
I had some misses at first but then it came into its own.
95 grain Vmax's didnt let me down. They were accurate and destructive.

Spike and his 22-250 was a co-joined killing machine.
After a string of successful hits ranging out to 400 yards the guy finally had a miss. All I could think was, "this guy is human after all"

Good Job you two ... the world is now "slightly" safer from a massive rat-attack.
Bring on them terrorists ....

I take it that with all those targets-of-opportunity you didn't try calling any song-doggies ?

See any speed-goats ?

SB, it would have been even better if you had been there.

Hope you'll give it a go sometime.

No speed goats and yup we didnt have time for the song dogs, we were to busy shooting.

...I'm sure we gave them something to sing about.

Looks like a redline on the fun-o-meter. This is inspiring me to go break in a new .243 Winchester I just picked up a few weeks ago. I'm thinking some prairie dogs need to die. You know, in order to keep all those little critters you just sent to the other side company. Great job boys.

Baiting! I'm telling!

I passed by many inviting fields when I drove from bear hunting to jackrabbit hunting; my regret and longing were palpable.

OK, what happened, did you forget my phone number? I am just going nuts to put the hurt on some sage rats, rock chucks, song dogs, and maybe even a few wild hogs?

Give me the heads up next time you head out, could ya'?

SU, I've still got those dies for you if you're interested.

Well dadgum, look who showed up, one of the members of the rat patrol. Dude, you really missed out. I know we killed over a 1m rats. We needed help badly, where were you?

I heard you had got your priorities mixed up and was really into building retro cars and then blowing up dolls to sit next to you while you drove around. I heard you preferred black chicks with long blond hair!

Next time for sure!

Yeah, I still take those dies,

Thanks!!

Well, actually I prefer Red hair! LOL

So, bear hunting this weekend and tied up the weekend of the 20th, so any time after that is good with me. Just let me know. Heck, let's just get together for a beer some time! Lots of stuff to catch up on.
