Found the last "demo" pair of Swarovski 8X42 SLC HDs at Cabelas for $1200. They were considered demo, but the guy at the store said they had never been out of the box. They sure didn't look like they had either.
Anyway I have used 8X before but always liked 10X for general use out west. All the guides I know use 10X too.

I know I will gain a wider field of view, brighter image, less perceived shake etc.. Hopefully I don't regret the 8X42s though. Last year I watching a Bull across a canyon and I was wishing I had 12X.

I have 8x for almost all my personal hunting and binocular needs.

However when I work I use 10x. I agree that many guides and PHs prefer and use 10x.

Speaking just for myself, I prefer the 8s for the smaller package and steady one hand hold. I Also don't over judge things because the 10x makes them look bigger then they are.

When working, I'm under no stress or anxiety to shoot. It's calmer and easier to make good decisions with what I'm seeing. I need to see horn tips, antler points, and determine gender at times which might only be possible in a split second. There is also a need to determine hide quality on bears in spring to see if they are rubbed. I also can use two hands to hold 10x steady, no bow or gun in my hands.

I also need to see blood on the departing animal if possible in dust or through the brush.

As a set of glasses for your personal hunting 8x is great. If your doing it for a living many prefer 10's.

I hunt extremely wide open country every year out west. Its always been my opinion if I needed more than 8x it's time to pull out the big eyes or spotter.

When I do hit the thicker stuff I much prefer 8's.

Just my opinion, everyone has their preferences. Just saying I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 8x.
