It does't matter if you paid a little too much or not, compared with what you will pay for a new rifle with less features you did OK.
Enjoy it as you have a good, solid and I'll bet very accurate rifle

Phil, that was kind of my reasoning too - the price versus buying a new rifle with barrel band, express sights, etc. seems much more reasonable. And if you tried to build it from scratch, you'd spend even more. So if it's in as good a shape as it appears, I'll never fret over paying a grand.

Sonvolt, I believe you have bought the rifle that you will keep until you die.

It looks exactly like mine. The recoil pad--on mine anyway--tends to harden quickly. I replaced mine this past year with a Pachmeyer.

I would put a low-power scope of your choice on Weaver 2-piece bases. Then, should you need to, a coin in your pocket can release the scope and you can access the express sights. Or, you can spend a bit more and mount the scope with a ring/base combo that features levers.

I was hoarding when hoarding wasn't cool.

Thanks, dawaba. I actually have a Pachmayr Old English I was holding for this rifle, and a Leupold 1x4 scope mounted in Warne Quick Detach rings I'm also holding for this one. I may or may not replace the recoil pad though - I used to shoot a Pre-64 Model 70 in .375 with a fairly hard pad and it never really bothered me. (I probably lost a few points off my I.Q. from the beatings but no one could tell ...)

Looking forward to getting it all tricked out.

You can replace the pad ONLY if the new one is English red.

Its a rule.

A friend has one. It is a bit barrel heavy, but easy to shoot and very accurate.

Guys, I received the rifle today and am very pleased. I actually believe it's unfired - there's no sign of use on the bolt face, in the bore, in the chamber area, feed ramp, etc. She looks straight up new.

One concern though - I'm confused by the magazine follower. It's not only very short, but it seems to be too narrow. With the slightest flick of the finger, you can cause it to pop up into the bolt's path (as seen in pic), completely jamming up the works if you're trying to close the bolt on an empty chamber. I'm having a hard time believing this is the right follower for this rifle - is it possible Whitworth stuck a follower from a smaller action in there by mistake and since no one's ever actually used the rifle, it's never come to light?

Some of you guys with a Whitworth Express please educate me. Is your follower like this?

Thanks,
DeWayne

I have both a 375 and a 458 Whitworth. They both have the same size follower.3 1/16 long by 5/8 wide at the front and 13/16 at the rear.About a 1/16 play from side to side.No way it can up past those lips in the top of the magazine box..The followers looks just like yours.

Thanks, Roc. We've been discussing this over on the gunsmithing forum. It seems there's too much side-to-side slop between the follower and the receiver below the rails - this permits the corner of the follower to pop up past the rail, and then the rest of it tries to follow.

Looks to be a nice one, btw they will shoot good too. It was easy to get groups in the inch range with mine and I just started load work really.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H
