I am starting to prepare for our (Hopefully) successful draw for spring Griz this year in BC where we live.
This will be my son's and I first Grizzly hunt and I am just starting some new load development for my 45-70.I have been shooting the 300 gr Barnes but I am nearly out so I am wanting to try something new for this hunt.
What have you guys used with good success?

Anything other than a 45-70...

Great as long as shots are very short, but once the bear starts moving he can go outside "short" range very fast...

What are you calling Short range?
I will be using my -06 with 220 partitions. As my son is a lefty he has the choice of his 270 win or my 45 -70.
He is saving up his money for a new 9.3x 62 but I doubt he will get that before bear season.

Inside 100 yards I'd have no problem busting a big grizz with my 45-70. Seen it done at longer ranges but that's my personal limit for grizz with the 45-70. Shooting 420gr+p Garrett Hammerheads.

That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

Your 270 with 160 Partitions would be a good choice.

Inside of 100 is what I was thinking as well.
I have no doubt that his 270 will work well. He shoots 130 ttsx and they have shot through everything he has shot so far.
I have not tried any cast bullets in the 45-70 yet. What I was after originally was to see what bullets guys have used with success on a grizz. By success i mean good penetration as well as being tough enough to be reliably from any angle. The kind of bullet that you have faith in to get the job done.

If you were hunting bears in the fall on fish I could see the 45-70 being a good choice . But IME hunting spring bears I'd like a little more range than the 45-70 affords.

I have seen situations where escaping, wounded bears were shot at ranges far greater than 100 yards...
