If you bough a new .243 and were in Oregon (if location matters) where and to whom would you send the rifle to have it punched out to .243 AI ?
Thanks in advance,
Mark

I would rather leave it alone as a factory 243.
I have had a few "AI's" since the 50's and even commissioned some to be made up. They were fun to do at the time however looking back at it I wish I had not bothered.
Perhaps we all have to get at least one.

How about naming it "Semper Fi" in honor of savage_99 insulting the Gentleman's son who is a Marine.

Soooooooo in answer to the OP's question, my first impulse would be to consult members here who are gunsmiths, Redneck and McColemanboth have great reputations...

As much as it pains me to write this, I kinda agree with Don.
It's one thing to go Ackley if you're having a new barrel screwed on, but I personally see it as a waste of time and money on an already put together and perfectly functioning rifle.

Mickey or Redneck would be a fine choice if the Ackley setback path must be followed.

Think the OP is looking for someone local, and I would suggest going to the Gunsmith thread or look in the phone book and call a few of the LGS's that have a gunsmith.

+1 on the gunsmiths here at the forum as I have always tried to do business with forum members as oft as I can but if you want to stay in Oregon with your rifle for less paperwork and shipping costs, I highly reccomend Jim Rector of Valley Shooters Supply in LaGrande Oregon.
He screwed together my last (probably ever) full custom about 8 years ago, had a hand in my 416 Rigby build and a 458 Lott build before that, and does much work for Ross Seyfied and a couple of other international hunters of some repute and experience.
He has built a good number of winning 1,000 yard benchrest rifles and competes in that game himself.
I hope this helps. Good luck with the project! Give a look at the 6mmAI and 6/284 as well. Those two offer more significant upgrades in performance over the 243, AI or otherwise.
