I'd like to see a test of first round accuracy and case life comparisons between this method and virgin correct headstamp brass.
Just because I'm curious like that.

Mike I don't look at it as a first round accuracy thing. It is a properly forming brass to your chamber out of the gate to prevent problems later on thing.

4Th,
The 85X/87'Max Swapaloo is an old "secret" and do nice thangs.
Today,I'd simply Test Drive a 105'Max and if keyholed,I'd rebarrel.
Quickly.(grin)
Boolits matter farrrrrr more than headstamps and it's all about reserve RPM.
Re-hint.
'vigant,
If/when talkin' like BC's and boolits of like construction,I'll ALWAYS be the first in line to reduce weight...which means increased speed, reduced drop, reduced drift, reduced recoil, more impact velocity and increased terminal affects.
Win/win.
Hint.
Muskeg,
I've necked bajillions of 243's to 308,with "regular" vanilla expander balls.
Nawwwww...way more than that.(grin)
TN,
Resistance simply equals positive headspace and is to be rejoiced...rather than sticking your dick out the opened kitchen window and flaunting a Rattle.
Don't be afeared of a Sharpie answering all your questions,as YOUR chamber,is YOUR gauge and simply cannot be amiss. Pun be intended.
Hint.
aalf,
I liken lock rings akin to a floating scale and seldom really cinch 'em down, because I handle every lot and every batch, with love...and the sole constant is,that nothin' is constant.(grin)
Thus the affinity for "feel".
Doubly so,when talkin' lotsa barrels chambered same.
Rabid,
Have seen/done it oftener,than often.
A Rattle can never hang and often won't even go "Bang".
NO contest.

Any place to find a list of parent cases? Meaning, what other calibers can this be done for?
243 from the 308
Any others?
223?

243, 260, and 7-08 (and .358) from the .308
25-06, .270. and .280 (and 35 Whelen and .338-06) from the .30-06.
.22-250 from the .250 Savage.....
And so on and so forth.
A wise man is frequently humbled.

aalf,
I've done that very thang, along with the Redding Competition Shellholders and much prefer a loosened lock ring and simply adjust as per the lot/chamber.
'Ag,
The list of donors,is [bleep] near boundless.
Thus the inherent beauty of the very premise.

Very true. I was referring solely to terminal kinetic energy = 0.5mV^2. For kinetic energy, increases in V that are less than increases in m, m will trump V. I should have known better with a BC that was essentially same-same, and got tagged leading off first base with too much mass and not enough velocity. *grin* Now back to our regularly-scheduled programming....

"Foot-pounds of energy" is about the last place someone should be looking for in regards to..... Well anything.

Where would you stop for a false shoulder? How much of a neck would you need to hold the bullet in place for practical hunting purposes.3/4 of a bullet diameter? 1/2?

'vigant,
It's not often that I reference energy and when I do it is to [bleep] with a Window Licker and usually expressed as "energy"...because it is a moot designator, which denotes nothin' that makes a schit. I typically liken it akin to "SD",which quantifies all the needless quantities too and misses the things that do matter,by [bleep] light years.(grin)
As per Blood Sports, that which I cited,is and always will be the crux.
Hint.
'Lumber,
I've seen me connect dots,with great regularity.(grin)
If I took you out for a 5 minute Crash Course...you'd be wanting to Reload, about 30 seconds into it.(grin)
Hint.
'11,
You "stop" when you can chamber the Virgin, while feeling positive headspace. Rest assured that you'd be the only [bleep] person on the Planet, able to close the bolt on a 308 hull in a SAAMI OEM 243Win's chamber, with only 3/4 a boolit's diameter of 6mm neck length having been sized. Ain't happenin',nor close.
Don't "think",because it ain't gonna do you any favors. Simply lube, size and feel...then report back.
Rifles talk,yet noone listens.
Hint.

Boxer, I think I have about got the whole idea in my mind but I do have one more question. I have .243, 7mm08, and .308 dies but have nothing to make a false shoulder on the .308. Is there another way without buying another set of dies just to make a false shoulder? miles
Look out for number 1, don't step in number 2.

Thanks Boxer. I was thinking of my 8x57( original military chamber), of which I have always had a false shoulder by backing the die off about .015".I'll bet that that 338 expander ball would work in my 8x57 too. Thanks. Think I'll try that.

I wuz good, until that %#$& orange thing popped up on the screen and made my eyes water. Tried to make an appointment with the eye Doc, but can't see the phone buttons.
Ho'nuts have been driving me nuts for over 30 years. Then I kinda figured out the "snug fit" thing was the way to go, but haven't tinkered any in some time with that dinky little bastige.
'Twas my first varmint cartridge, back in 1964.
If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.
