Since I can't get the dates that work for me in POW island I am now entertaining a fishing trip out of San Diego. It has been more than 10 years since I last did this. I am thinking a 2.5-4 day trip. Anyone done one of these recently, any suggestions or recommendations? Probably will be at least 6 of us.

Dennis,
I used to do quite a bit of it but switched to fishing out of Lapaz, Baja and am just booking a week now.....Fisherman's Fleet by David Jones.
The best website for keeping up on San Diego and Baja fishing seems to be Bloodydecks.com

The one trip I did was in August and we loaded up on Albacore. Only other thing caught was a shark. I am hoping for a trip that includes some bottom fishing in Mexican waters this time.

My buddy wants to go to Loreto MX but I think it will be too hot to enjoy Baja that time of year. Out on the open water is a different story.

August? Do NOT do the Baja. I've done the open water trip out of San Felipe... trying to sleep on the bunks even the topside ones is impossible in that heat, there wasn't a minute when your body didn't have a layer of sweat and the boat ran out of drinking water.
You need to stay on the pacific (cool) side, which means tuna and dorado more than bottom fishing.

Dennis, I did a few of these fishing trips years ago when we lived in California. We sailed out of Port Hueneme. It's near Oxnard.
I had a customer that worked part time for the captain of the boat, so he would get us a good deal on the trip. Saved about 30%.
The trips were successful. We left the port at 1600. Went out and bottom fished for about an hour, also caught a few barracuda. These were used to feed us for our evening dinner. The last time I checked, I think that the guy had gone out of business when the economy took a dump.
If you go, hit me up. With this new work schedule there could be a little bit of savings $$$, week day trips run a little bit cheaper than weekend trips.
I'd love a freezer full of tuna.

More and more people I know are booking on overnight boats out of Mazatlan, getting into nice yellow fin without the long voyage.
