I've never been faced with such during a hunting season, but post season the wife and I once encounterd about a dozen bedded mule deer with everyone being a monster. After looking at them from less than 100 yds for 45+ minutes, I could still not decide which I would have leveled if I'd had a tag in hand.
With a string of elk like that, it would be tough to nail one with the thought that a bigger one might just be coming over the horizon.
Another thought is that with concentrations like that, there's a lot of ground in the area with no elk.

I have a good friend that works on a very large ranch here locally, his job is to keep the fences in good shape. He is always talking about how a herd of elk will tear down fences on their way through an area.

On the fences.... Cookie got into the middle of about 25 head on her last cow hunt, took out a target animal, and the rest milled for about 5 minutes and went back to feeding. While we enjoyed the view, we eventually agreed that we needed to get to work. As we stood up, the elk took out about about 100 yds of fence. I came back the next day with clips, wire, and a stretcher and put things back together.
With some work projects, I've made the mistake of putting up electic fences and not charging them. Return a few days later, and one finds wire all over the landscape. When they panic, they don't worry much about wire.

I first hunted that unit in the 60's. Oregon has done a tremendous job in managing that unit. Road closures, trophy bull management and restricted bull tags have made it 1 of the best trophy bull units in Oregon. Takes 15 plus preference points or more for a big bull tag. 300 plus bulls are common, with up to 340 seen and killed every year. There is not a day that goes by without seeing elk. A game management success story.

maybe someday I'll have enough points or get lucky
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.
