And for those worried about the .375 Ruger cartridge somehow "disappearing"...a couple of places are issuing .300 H&H rifles now grin. I somehow doubt that the .375 Rugers are going away anytime soon...

I'm not sure why, but it's getting more popular. It will never take the place of the H&H but it will be around for awhile. Now if you could just find ammo/brass.

No, already exists many and more are made excellent guns in 375 HH. They come in light/heavy, blued/stainless and walnut/synthetic versions. So no need to invent the wheel again.
I dont have anything against Rugers version, but it is not for me.

.

I have had a 375 Ruger since I saw the first one and had a 416 Ruger built before the factory ones were available. I like them.

I have a collection including many of the African medium and big bore rifles including the Nitro Expresses, the British and European bolt action cartridges, 375 H&H based wildcats, 460 Wby based wildcats, the 404 based wildcats, the 585 Nyati, etc.

But I would not take either the 375 or 416 Ruger to Africa without a more common African cartridge gun, e.g., 375 H&H or 458 Win Mag, as back up for contingencies.

I have gotten into culling, meat hunting, shooting leopard bait, and other situations and needed to buy ammunition in Africa. I have never lost my luggage while traveling to Africa, but have been in camp with others who have.

It is difficult enough to find three boxes of 375 H&H, let alone a rare new cartridge.

Don't know what the laws are concerning it, but I have left both loaded ammo and empty brass with PH's who were quite appreciative. They seemed to be more excited about the common rounds like 30-06, 375 H&H, etc than the less common ones like the 280 Remington.

There are definitely exceptions to that. One PH thought I was a saint leaving him brass for the 10mm Auto pistol cartridge since he had a pistol in that cartridge. We both used 200-grain solids in ours.

I have always viewed the 375 Ruger as an Alaskan cartridge. Alaska has a good pipeline of ammunition, so if you have that rifle you can always order ammo and be good.

Africa on the other hand, like Hammer1 says, is another story. Lost luggage with your ammo can ruin a hunt or at best, force you to a backup or camp rifle.

I have a pistol in 38 Super. Is that a dead cartridge? I had a 9mm barrel fitted to it so when I traveled I could always find ammo. You cannot find 38 Super ammo in every sporting good store. I think there is more than just current and dead cartridges. There are levels of in between. There are cartridges that are in production, but only once a year; is that dead?

The market will ultimately decide which cartridges should die (ammo no longer in production, my definition). Certainly if need were the only criteria we had for cartridges, about 2/3 of what we have could go away; do we REALLY need a 280 when there is a 270 (or reversed)?

If you want readily available ammo, buy the 375 H&H. If you don't preparing in advance for your needs (loading your own or ordering it before you need it) go for other cartridges.

One reason to take spouses, children, personal photographers, personal secretaries, etc to Africa with you is that each one gets an allowance of guns and ammo for the trip so you can experiment more.

Whatever happened to the .338 Campfire ??

The silence has been deafening.

This one looked like a winner to me.
Not for everyone, but a fairly simple re-chambering on an existing .338 Win to get started.

On the down side, I suppose that inadvertently firing a .375 Ruger factory round in the .338-375 chamber would be disastrous.
If the 375 would even chamber.

Just askin'

IME as long as the African remains a 375, ensuring the bedding is correct - preferably with fiberglass - is probably enough. But conversion of the Hawkeye African to a large medium (either the 416 or 404 Ruger) makes revising action tang, magazine box and bottom metal fit imperative. Fairly immediate longitudinal cracking of the wood stock throughout the the action inletting and wrist is the probable result OTW.

BTW, the stock mods are fairly straightforward and the result of the conversion so useful, that the balance heavily favors conversion. Hopefully Ruger will fix the wood stock inlet problem from the factory and release a 416 - or better yet a 404 Ruger - African from the factory. cool

How does the 375 Ruger compare to the .375 Dakota?

I received my 375 Ruger Guide Gun a few weeks ago too. Just received my Alaskan quick detach scope rings and mounting a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x 36mm with the Boone and Crockett reticle. That way in heavy cover will use the factory express sights and shots out in open or longer distances will install the scope. It will be around awhile. Howa and I think Savage is even chambering for 375 Ruger.

If this three year old thread is any indication it seems like it may just stick around. I wish it well but hope it never replaces the H&H, nor could it. Now if the .376 Steyer disappeared I suppose I could get over it.

Thanks! I borrowed the stock from my Whelen. It will be my moose rifle for next season. Should be perfect for Northern BC hunting.

BCSteve what bullet and load are you going to use to shoot out of the 375 Ruger for moose? I am planning on using mine for elk and bear this year. Trying to decide what bullet and weight to use.

I haven't started developing a load for it yet but I have two boxes of 250gr TTSX that I picked up at the same time as the rifle that I want to use. I have some RL15, RL17, Varget and H4350 that most .375 Ruger owners have been successful with, just have to find the right combination.
