So here I am with a .243 that I don't need. So with deer and coyotes in the mix...what do I do with it?
Could I go .250 savage without any problems? Yes, in spades. 75gr V-max can run 3200-3400 for varmints (3415 from my 700 Classic .250) and 100gr NBTs or Hornadys at 2900-3000 will do for most things. Put an 8 or 9 twist Pac-nor barrel and have fun with 110gr Acu-bonds or 115 Bergers.

9 twist on a .25/06 and a .250 AI. Both sub-moa with the Bergers. The /06 puts Nosler 100gr soloid base into one hole for 5 shots, repeatedly. The AI is about a 3/4" shooter with 100gr Hornadys. Good enough for anything I'll have to shoot.

Looks like the verdict is out. Although I like the punch it to ackley suggestion.
I think I'll take the saved $$$ and drop it in a good stock. Wrap a 6x36 leupy in some talleys and go forth and kill chit.
Pretty sure I've got some 95g BTs and some 75g Speer HPs laying around and a few pounds of varget. Do it, you'll love it.

I have owned several .243's.. Just picked up a Varminter a year or so ago.. Nice caliber.. I have calibers on both sides of it.. My .250 Sav. has done little except sit in the safe.. If it were not for a relative giving it to us, I would trade for something else.. The old .243 has lots going for it.. From shooting varmints to whitetails.. It is a good one.. A great gobble gun if you are allowed to use a rifle on turkeys..

I would be leaning hard toward a 22/243, 22 Cheetah, 22/6mmAI or similar. I really love and enjoy the uberfast .224's

Shoot about 1,000-2,000 rounds through it before asking the re-barrel question.
Get a budget stock from Stockey's if you have to change anything.
Then you have the perfect truck gun.
Spend the rest on good scope and lots of Boolits.

The .250 Savage is one sweet cartridge, but then again so is the .22-250 with a 1-8 twist barrel....

You got it cheap; don't spoil the deal by putting more money into it.

I would leave it 243 and develop a load with a 80 gr bullet. It will be very nice to toss in a walnut stock, ie Boyd's...Talleys and a 2-7 or 3-9 Loopy.
80-85 Sierras are the plan for my recently purchased 243.

If a factory barrel, chamber it to a .243 AI and shoot everything up to 105 grain bullets. Change stock later if it shoots well and then re-barrel to faster twist 1 in 8 after it is shot out.

nothing wrong with .243 but i was looking for alittle more power i would check the length and if it would give me enough length in the magizne to get a good seating depth for my bullets.. I would rechamber to 6mm-284
It is better to have it and not need it , than to need it and not have it ( by master gunsmith & very wise friend )
