Hi y'all. I'm looking for a Caterpillar backhoe 416b or 416c stick cylinder (dipper cylinder), part # 109-7020, 4.5" bore x 28" stroke, 2.17" (55mm) pipe diameter for a family member's 2000 model 416c. Suggestions where we might get this part CHEAP would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :-)

I work with heavy equipment.

The cheapest for us is having them built by a hydraulic shop that does machine work.

Don't know if that helps or not, but you get what you pay for.

If everything is still straight and the chrome isn't badly pitted, rebuilding it is the cheapest way to go.

I've rebuilt quite a few cylinders and its not hard once you figure out which way it's put together ( nothing is ever universal)

Yes. A rebuild is nowhere near rocket science, if the major components are in good shape.

Never worked Cats, but did lots of aircraft cylinders in my Navy years.

lot of machine shops do hyd repairs , new tubes ,new rams ,should be lots of used parts dealers within 500 miles of you though just make sure its been gone over,

As noted, by the time you've covered the shop expenses for a re-tube, and a new rod, the complete cylinders for sale in machinery Trader will probably be the more affordable option.

Yup they have everything hydraulic.

There are used and reman parts locating services. If you simply ask Cat for one, you're gonna get hurt. Cat don't care, they don't have to. They're Caterpillar.

There are plenty of options out there.

How much is down time going to cost you while you hee-haw around looking for a cheap option????

ouch! If the cylinder was extended at the time then its probably just the tube that's toast. Bailey's can hook you up with that I'd say. May be cheaper(?) to go the parts salvage route tho.

I've worked on those cylinders many times over the years. Been working at a hydraulic shop since 1993...that's all we do.

Bailey's, Surplus Center, Dalton Hyd, Baum, none of these are gonna have a direct replacement. If ya want to retrofit something, then give 'em a try.

The rod may be ok, but I've seen 'em bend along with the tube even if they're extended. You could try Second Steel, they're a second hand Cat outfit; but most every cylinder we have gotten from them needed be rebuilt before it could be used.

Best way to go is to have a shop make a new tube for the one you have. We do it all the time. Way less than buying a new one from Cat.

The outfit that we get our seal kits from lists 2 different seal kits for that cyln at $141 or $165. You don't want to go back with the old ones.

I don't think he uses it to generate revenue, so he has time to look around for the most economical solution.
