I have a .260 model 7 with an 18.5 and yes, off the bench it's loud but when ia hunted with it and took a couple of deer I didn't notice it at all.

Having owned an 18" bbl Model 7 in .243, I'm firmly in the "never again" category myself. While the noise level was indeed beyond obnoxious, it was the light show that really stole the show! Didn't take that one out night calling more than once! Couple that with the considerable velocity loss of the short barrel and it just wasn't worth it, no matter how "handy" the rifle appeared to be. It now wears a 22" bbl and I couldn't be happier.

Curious what you're shooting out the window of a truck that you need a centerfire?

Don't like the Ruger Compact. Just cant like the balance (or lack thereof). A Remington youth model with the 20" factory sproter barrel has a much better feel IMHO. I've found that monuvering the shorter stock negates 2" of barrel.

The old Ruger Internationals were 18 barrels and I thought they were very handable in 243, even in 30/06....

DMc Whatever needs shooting. Is this a trick question?
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

22" is as short as I like. But then 24" is about as long as I like as well.
For a kid, I think 22 is fine. It's the stock dime skins that count, assuming it balances worth a chit.
What the fugg is a "dime skin"? Sounds dirty. It should read dimensions.

Rancho,
To actually provide some useful information.
I had a 18" barreled 243 Model 7 for a lot of years. That was the action that eventually went on to wear out a lot of 260 barrels.
The noise was so terrible with earplugs in that I put somewhere around 3500 rounds through it. Shooting it without earplugs would make your ears ring pretty good.
VVN560 was about the least velocity I'd lose in a short tube. 7828 was a waste of powder. 4831SC was a close 2nd. My bullet of choice was the 95 grain Btip. Lighter bullets lost a much bigger percentage of velocity. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy turning prarie dogs and gophers inside out with Speer TNTs.

Still wondering about the question..
Is there something wrong with shooting centerfires out a truck window?

No problem IMO and I don't want any more recoil or muzzle blast than is necessary for what I'm shooting at.
I had an older blued walnut Model 7 in 223 with the 18&1/2" barrel. I shot it a lot on ground squirrels, and other stuff, sometimes out the truck window and never thought about recoil or muzzle blast.

Still wondering about the question..
Is there something wrong with shooting centerfires out a truck window? All OK if shooting out the drivers side window from the drivers seat. Electing to shoot out the passenger side window from the drivers seat is a bad idea.
I enjoy handguns and I really like shotguns,...but I love rifles!

Still wondering about the question..
Is there something wrong with shooting centerfires out a truck window? It's illegal to shoot deer sized game from a vehicle in TX, rabbits to coyotes aren't really an issue, any of which could easily be dispatched with a good rimfire. Didn't occur to me that it may be perfectly legal in other states. DMc
