A tweeting bird tells me the Terraplane is back in production. You can even get a hand signed one from Dana to rub your lizzard all over.

Somebody buy one ane tell me if it has rigid enough stays to actually get some lift on the load lifters.

Maybe they're actually going to burn the NICE frame now?

I saw this a while back... it's a Terraplane in name only.

The new lacks the original Arcflex suspension which is really what separated the old DD's from today's MR packs. I'll take the old Arcflex suspension over the current Mystery Ranch suspension all day, every day.

Too bad IMO...

It's a shame to watch MR get passed up by everybody. I still think the NICE 6500 is the best bag ever made for the backpack hunter.

There market really is the guy that's sick of the cheap [bleep] (Elberlesuck, Badlands, etc) but not educated enough to know about Kifaru, Paradox, and McHale.

Brad, what's the difference in the suspension? I assumed that the MR suspensions were the same as the old DD (not including the NICE).

Somehow guys that use Mystery Ranch continue to kill big zsschit year after year and not complain too much... See scenarshooter, Greenhorn, mtMiller, Randy Newberg, dinkshooter, BuzzH, Seacat, The Foss family...

But they probably haven't heard of Kifaru yet laugh

Dan:

It doesn't surprise me a bit.
The MR NICE 6500 weighs 10#.
The Kifaru Long Hunter with frame weighs 11#.

The combined weight of my pack, sleeping bag, ground pad and tent is less than 10#.

Yeah sure they're durable but they simply weigh too much. Manufacturers need to strike a balance between weight and durability. MR and Kifaru have totally forgotten about weight.

I emailed them about the 7.5lb weight of the Terraplane and the answer was that all the other lighter packs (Kifaru, SG, Paradox, etc) sucked and weren't durable. I guess Google don't work in Bozeman. Pissin' up the proverbial rope no doubt. I guess it's a step up from the NICE garbage but they aren't breaking new ground. How long can a company run on a name?

While they're certainly not "lightweight," I think you're way off on this. I'll weigh mine when I get home.

Not sure of the exact weight, but my Kifaru Timberline 2 with Bikini frame weighs about half of that.

Smokey:

I'm just reporting what's on their web sites.

Kifaru Duplex Platform & Suspension - 3# 15oz
Kifaru Long Hunter Legacy pack, 6,300 c.i. - 7# with basic lid
Looks like 10# 15oz.

MR NICE Frame with 6,500 c.i. pack - 9# 15.6 oz.

Kelty Red Cloud 110, 6,590 c.i. - 5# 13 oz.
Osprey Zenith 105 XL, 6,896 c.i. - 6# 1 oz.

The Kelty and Osprey packs may not last as long but they cost half as much so I can afford to buy two of them.

KC

Edit: I looked again. The Kifaru web site gives two weights for the Long Hunter with basic lid. Confusing. Let's see what yours actually weighs.

My G1 Longhunter frame with KU stays and the following Hill People Gear kit:

Prarie Belt
Tara Compression Pocket and compression straps
SM25 Silnylon packbag

Total weight is 4lb 12 ounces. With a couple of KU belt pouches an HPG belt pocket it'll be slightly over five pounds.

That setup should be about perfect for everything you're not going to do.

It's not 11 pounds. I compare it to my MR6500 and you can feel the weight difference easily.

Have you played with the other packs? I own a MR, Eberlestock and a Kifaru. I've played with buddy's Kuiu Icon packs. I still haven't found one that compares with MR for comfort and durability. I think the Nice frame with the Metcalf bag is a great day pack set-up. I don't start worrying about weight until I do 10+day packs.

Agreed....my setup, Opsrey Aether, Rab summit tent and ID bag come in under 10lbs.
No way I'm strapping on a ten pound plus pack.
