I am starting to gather parts for a build. I want some input on what u guys think I should pick for a caliber. I have a 204,22-250,260,and a 338 lapua that I will be getting from RW Snyder in a few weeks. It has to be a long action as I bought a stock. I live in iowa so no big game hunting with a rifle but I am taking trips in future. What caliber would fill my gap the best. Looking to stay on the tame side of recoil as it will be a light rifle. Prefer no fire forming or necking brass.

Thanks,
Matt Allen

I'd say 30-06 and you can load it up or down as you'd like. 150 gr TTSX is a great round with low recoil.

6.5x55 SE is another good option with low recoil.

Is it on a Remington 700 magbox? The best you can do is a 280 AI and use the Nosler formed brass as you don't want to form. Second choice a 6-06 would be a little less recoil and would get the job done as well. Putting a 30-06 case in a FL die is the same operation if you were keeping it 30-06 or taking it to 6mm you just use a different die.

Based on what you have in your collection and your start with a long action, I'd say 280AI as well.

Any fast 30 of your liking. 30/06, 300WIN, 300WBY, 300RUM... It is not american to not have a 30 cal in your arsenal <G>

i would say the 6mm-06 . I have two of them i just make my brass out of 25-06 run them thru your die and your done. Have made them out of 270 win just run them thru die, then trim to 2.484 . i also would consider the 6.5-06 with some of the high 8.c. Bulllets they have now should get job done well...

Looking at your line up,you have two varmint cartridges and a 260; think I would lean toward something for which factory ammo is more common if I were planning to travel from home for an extended hunt....stuff happens and you may need to find ammo some day far from home.

I know this is boring but I'd build a 270, 280, or a 30/06.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Another vote for a 270 Win , and I would also give a 7mm mag a strong look!

I'd look 7 RM or 30-06. 270 has a lot of overlap w/ 260 & 280 factory ammo is rare. 280 AI has cool factor, but just like its parent limited availability of factory ammo. These two are common, and if I were to build another custom it'd likely be in one of these two just because they're "do it all" cartridges.

I like a common chambering for my out of state rifles for the comfort of a "just in case" scenario. Boring? Perhaps. Reliable? Absolutely.

If nothing more either of these would be the perfect back-up to your 260 on big game trips.

This or if you don't mind paying a little more for the Nosler formed brass, 280 Ackley.
