Got permission to shoot a new ranch and finally we had a 63 degree day. Of course the 6 inches of snow from two days before left the ground a muddy mess so it was all about walking and lying on a tarp but then only after finding a relatively dry spot. You can't see the town from a road, the town is enormous, and I saw no evidence of other hunters. Dumb dogs, great shooting. This town has a new sheriff: My day ended early when I had a round that wouldn't chamber. Found mud on the case when I ejected it. Dumped all the rounds out of my coat pocket and found mud in my pocket - don't know how that happened. Was able to clean the mud from my chamber but wasn't able to clear the action and wasn't about to shoot with grit on the action lugs. Got home and pulled the VSSF from the stock and washed the stock in the sink, hosed out the action with WD40, cleaned it all up, oiled it, and put it back together. Even my binoculars needed a soap and water scrub - what a mess but it sure was fun and I plan to do it again next good day. Now if I could only get someone to spot for me. Since it was muddy I left my Vixen in the truck. I was using my 220 Swift, Remington VSSF, 6.5-20 Lupie w/turrets, 53 gr Vmax and H380. Had about a 15 mph wind but was spanking them pretty regularly until the mud problem.

Shooting it with mud inside the action can really help smooth things out.
Looks fun.

I have been slogging around in the mud as well up north of you but not having the fun that you are. What cartridge is your Vixen? I am going to buy my step dad's 223 Vixen next days off. Have wanted that rifle for the 20 or so years he has owned it.

Brain, mine is a 222 mag, built near 1967. The 223 round is a better fit foe the Vixen' s magazine length.
Hope all is going well for you in the great white north, it is snowing now and for the next 48 hours here in the Black Hills. I'll be out shooting again next week - in the mud. Mud equals no Vixen.

Doing OK here in NoDak but may be getting back into winemaking in Walla Walla. Interviewed with respected winery there and am hopeful.

Was there again today and it was pretty dry. It was one of those RARE calm days, lack of wind really improved my shooting. Babies are about 2 inches long.
