I shoot a Remington 11-87 12 ga. here in New Jersey, a lot of guys shoot 870's, Savage 220's in 20 ga. and the H&R single shot.

Darn nice buck!
Started out with a H&R single shot ultraslugster 12 gauge. Also have a 1187 cantilever. The H&R is heavy but very accurate for a slug shotgun. I go between the two depending on the hunt. Have only used Remington copper solids and haven't been disappointed yet.

My slug gun is a Winchester Model 25 with an E.R. Shaw rifled barrel, I had it built many years ago before rifled barrels were available from the factory. Most of my deer were shot with Federal Hydra-Shok slugs, all were bangflops.

My slug gun is an Ithaca Model 37 with rifled barrel. Love the feel of the shotgun.

NEF single shot fully rifled barrel. It was very inexpensive and shot well. Yeah. I was impressed with a 20G ultra slug hunter I shot last fall. It was as accurate as the Savage 220 we were also shooting at 100 yards. For a lot less money.

But between 100 and 250 yds I haven't seen anything that will come close.

Quit giving in inch by inch then looking back to lament the mile behind ya and wonder how to preserve those few feet left in front of ya. They'll never stop until they're stopped. That's a fact.

I have limited experience hunting with slugs.
20 years ago, I used a 870 with a cantilever barrel and a rifled choke with Winchester 3" BRI slugs. Killed one deer.
Recently I had an elk tag in a zone where we had to use a bow, muzzleloader or a sluggun. I had purchased a fully rifled barrel for the 870 and installed a Timney trigger. Tested several slugs and the Hornady SST was the most accurate. Unfortunately, Never had an elk volunteer to be within range on property I had access to.
I installed the Timney trigger myself. Pretty easy. Make a big difference when shooting slugs.

At 100 yds, my savage 220 shoots 1 to 1.5 inch groups with the accutips. For nontoxic the federal trophy copper shoots 1.5 to 2 inches for me. This is my gun when I expect shots at 10 to 200 yds. For 10 to 75 yards I go with an 870 with lightfield exp. If your shots are close I would test the trophy coppers out of a pump or auto. While I love the 220, shell ejection is not the best.

It is just that 220 ejector/extractor leaves a lot to be desired. You really need to be forceful with the bolt to get spent shells to eject properly. Doesn't really bother me a you rarely need more than one shot. And I normally open all bolt rifles slowly and pull the spent case out by hand.
