I seldom if ever see any Savage 99s in .25-35, but when I do they are in poor condition. Other calibers I find range from good to excellent. Any input? Regards Jericho.

It seems that way with Winchester 94's, as well. They all look like they been dragged behind a tractor. I'm sure they were a sheepherder's favorite caliber. Used as a pick hammer, crow bar, post hole digger, barbwire fence stretcher, etc.

My experience of the .25-35 during the late 1940s and early 1950s in WAY northern California and nearby counties of OR and NV was that they WERE favored by backwoodsmen who lived right among the game and could pick their shots very carefully, or just wait for another day. They appreciated the light recoil and the lighter ammunition of the .25-35 and .25 Rem, too.
These guys saw rifles as just another tool (and they didn't necessarily consider whether the gun they were using would have collector value sometime later...). They worked hard at hard jobs in hard country and their tools got beat up. So did they.
Actually the sheepherders' favorite calibers where I was were probably a Colt SAA in .32 WCF or a surplus Luger in 7.65/.30. In rifles, they favored .25-20s. The key was a light gun with light ammo and fairly flat shooting to keep the coyotes on their toes. Some probably did use .25-35s too; I just didn't know any.

supposedly the sheep herders in Wyoming liked the .22 Hi-Power. Two of my 25-35's are well worn. But I have a nice one for my display. See pic. The catalog says 1899H's didn't come with fancy wood. This is one of about five I've seen with fancy wood. David

I have an 1899H with crazy nice wood. I had some pics on photobucket...

I have got a 1903 Sav99 in 2001 for $78 with a box of 303 Sav ammo. It has a poor bore. I have a 25-35 reamer and I am thinking of rebarreling it, drilling and tapping, and shooting a deer.

Shooting a deer is always a good idea. Breedin' sunzabeetches they are. And thievin', murderin', crazed savages they are too. The only good deer is a dead deer. Ask Grogel- he has some blood curdlin' stories about deer he can tell you.

Back to the subject of deer a guy we hunted with got treed by a spike buck while he was hunting squirrels with a single shot .22. The guys who were within earshot of the commotion said it sounded like Lester had a .22 semi-auto. It took a bunch of shots to finish the job but then Lester wasn't known as a good shot. This happened in the Ocala (Florida) National Forest. The place was known for strange happenings. David

Before I'd make a 25-35 and d&t that gun, I'd check into having it rebored to 338/303 or 358/303. JES in Cottage Grove Oregon. I would not D&T if it isn't already.
