I have an old target rifle that wants to come out and play again.
It's a 224 Durham Jet.
Based on .243 win necked down to .22, shoulder bumped back to lengthen neck and steepen the shoulder angle to 40*.
27" barrel, 1.25" at the muzzle so it's a bench gun for sure.
Anybody played with this cartridge that dates back to P.O.Ackley?

It holds 52.30 grains of water according to Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions; one load is noted: 46 gr. of H380 with a 60 grain spire point bullet [brand not cited] at 3980 FPS, apparently from Ackley's Vol. 1, page 286 so that Ackley-authored book will likely provide more powder and bullet weight loads.

That's about the most useful info offered for handloading from the Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions which also has the cartridge's blueprint dimensions. The manual also states "... a form die is required due to a .446 diameter shoulder".

Ackley's book may likely offer more of Ackley's powder loads for it. Best of luck in bringing that back to the firing line!

Thank you, Sir! That helps.
I contacted RCBS and dies are available so I think I'll give this rifle another try as is.
I had pondered having the barrel set back and re-chambered to something standard but I have standard .22 centerfire rifles already.
Besides, I like a little history and the connection with the shooters that came before.
The barrel is in very good shape so now the wait for dies begins.
Thanks again!

You are welcome. I thought after 40 views you had waited long enough...posters here are always ready to spend money on something new but the majority seldom really know the provenance of what their dollars are inheriting.

Like Finn Aagard said: " One gun,one load" to which I say: "And that's enough."
