Anyone have any experience using small pistol primers in the 222? I have fair supply of these and was wondering if they can be used with relatively mild loads in this cartridge.

I would not use them! That is unless you want to punch them and leave flame cut pits in the bolt face.-Muddy

you could use SP primers in your 222 Rem, but primer cups are thinner on the SP than the SR Primers and you would be taking a chance of getting a pierced primer with the stronger firing pin spring of the rifle compared to the Pistol weaker firing pin spring. Another problem, your 222 Rem operates at a much higher pressure than most handgun rounds and could cause some gas leakage with a pierced primer back into the firing pin hole of your rifle bolt plus damage your extractor . Answer you could use SP in your rifle but i wouldn't recommend unless a chit hit the fan situation and you can't find SR Primers and then i would use what i had.

They work, but aren't optimum. (yeah, I've dinked with them a bit in a 222)

They are better suited to Hornet loads.

Rifle primers are miles better in a 222.....

I use them in Blue Dot and SR 4759 loads in a pinch, and they work fine... but I am doing it at pistol pressures vs small rifle pressures....
