I'm looking to have a new rifle built for the purpose of goat hunting. I have a Remington 600 That I want to base this project off of. If anyone has any advice, I am willing to listen

260 Remington, since you are using the Rem 600 action

Sell the 600. It's just a push feed action with weak parts and a poor safety.

Look at Ruger, Winchester, Kimber, Mauser etc.

Buy a complete rifle ready to go and you will get fast delivery and upgrade the value of your rifle.

As for 'caliber' the .308 Winchester is good here if it's legal there.

you have the best short action made
-1.5" shorter rifle than a Rem. 700, that can be added to whatever barrel length you think you need, also a bit lighter
-you do not mention if you reload if not 260 Rem., 7/08 or 308
-if you reload these are still the best choices
-I have a 600 in all 3 and 7/08 is best overall

Good sense here; not much else to add.

If I was building a short-actioned rifle for mountain hunting, my first choice would be to build a 308 to take advantage of it's tremendous versatility. Over practical game ranges, the 308 will shoot as flat as the smaller calibers and yet have to option of packing a couple of heavy thumpers to dissuade that grizzly you may encounter where you will be hunting goats. I have seldom gone up on to the goat mountains here without seeing grizzlies so there is some potential for such an encounter.
308's shoot good and are easy to load for. If forced to, one can buy ammo anywhere.
If I had an aversion to the 308, I think I would go with the 7mm-08. It matches the 7x57 and that's pretty good performance to match.
Savage 99 is, of course, speaking from the wrong orifice and should be ignored on the subject. GD

-Savage that is a 700 not 600 bolt handle but there is some concern with the brazed on handles of any rem. bolts you may have less issues with a 600 in that they were all built when rem. had better quality control
-however given 5 million 700's and counting I wonder what the failure rate is and if this is due to using a 2x4 to remove a stuck case or was done by hand

M600s are a good solution to short and light. What is / was your 600 chambered in now?

The 308 Winchester is not a caliber. It is a cartridge.

Sorry, I overlooked the Rem 600 part of your post. So, I'd vote for the 308.

Sell it and buy exactly what you want as a factory production. It's cheaper, faster, mo betta, and has resale value when you're done. If you have to ask what caliber to use for a build, you aren't really ready to drop thousands of dollars on 'your own' preferences developed from years of experience.

Go buy a Kimber Montana in 243, 7-08, or 308. Or if you are really feeling fancy, get a Winchester extreme weather or a stainless Remington 700 mountain rifle and drop either in a McMillan edge.

Finish the process out and GFY.

Thank you all for your good advice. That exludes the last gentleman who thinks i should buy a foctory rifle. I grew up shooting nothing but custom and don't see any reason to change now. I think I will probably go towards the 7-08.
