I'm set on getting a bolt action, chambering 30 06. I have read a lot and have talked with friends and I'm between the Remmington 700 and the Savage (probably 116 trophy hunter XP)

I'm thinking stainless steel barrel..... and 30 06 because of round choices/variety.

Not sure synthetic or wood stock.. (like the wood look/feel but not set on either)

please give me some feedback on both. what is the pros/cons of both..

thanks for the help

Good choice in caliber!! I'd do SPS SS used and a ultralight stock from stocky and rock on.

Have you considered a Tikka?

Yeah, if the choice is between a new rem and a salvage, I'd take the tikka.

Great cartridge choice. As for the rifle, Tikka, hands down. The guys are right. Whether you want to go SS or blued will probably depend on the weather during your hunting season. It's a mixed bag for us so I have a foul weather rifle and a pretty wood stocked rifle. Tikka can cover all those bases depending on your preference. And they're smooth tack drivers.

I'd say get a 700, but that only shows what I like.

Handle both, see which feels better to you...then buy a Savage 114 Stainless Classic(Stainless/walnut). On the plus side Savage does offer packages with a decent(Nikon Prostaff) optic...

If you do not mind the look of the savages (I do not) go for it. I would not buy a newer remington.

I'm pretty hung up on the looks, handling and accuracy of my .30-06 700 CDL.

But it's important to buy what YOU like, not what I like!

That's a beautiful rifle guy. What redfield scope is that?

Thanks. It's an old 2-7x. Got it on a used rifle I bought a while back. Traded off the rifle, but really liked the old Redfield, so I kept it.

Both rifles you mention would serve you well, but as others have said add a Tikka to your list of possibles. Handle all of them and if you can shoot them first. I know a pawn shop where there is a Tikka superlite sitting right now with a (cheap) scope for $500. I have no need for it but it's been tempting me for about a month.

I'd also add the Weatherby Vanguard S2 Stainless to the mix. They're a darn nice rifle for the money.

I will say that my tikka did not like anything over 165 gr. Now granted it would shoot Moa with 180's and such but 150's where same hole at 100. If you don't need heavy bullets buy a tikka. If you need heavy buy a savage.

Were it me looking for a hunting rifle I would be looking at a second hand Husqvarna 148...tricked up with an after market trigger and a different safety it would do your great-grandchildren for hunting.

It would take some finding but is worth the effort.

Don't know where your from, but you should be able to pick up an older used Rem 700 bdl in 06' for 450-550. Use it, and if the wood stock doesn't appeal to you restock it. The 700 can be had in stainless too. The 700 has way way more options for aftermarket stuff than any other rifle. Stainless/syn 700 06's can be had, but theres alot more blued versons out there. You have lots of good advice, but if you expand your list I'd also add the A-bolt and the vanguard. Both very good rifles in that price range.
