Setting up a model 7 243 for my son to use this season for deer hunting. Going to buy a scope for it and have it narrowed down to 2. Nikon monarch or zeiss conquest. Which one would you guys go with?

Look at better rifles while your at it. Those #7's only have a trigger safety.
When the kid is unloading the rifle in the dark by your car you want the best.
The 2-7 Leupold is a universal scope.

Both are great scopes but my choice would be the Conquest.

Conquest by far imo. I currently own both and imo the Nikon, while decent doesn't even come close to the Conquest in any way.

I think the Conquest has better glass than the Nikon.
The M-7 is a light, sleek rifle. Neither of those scopes are that light or sleek.
My M-7 wears a VX-3 2.5-8x36 in LW Talleys. I'm having it fit for a CDS. The VX-3 is close to the Conquest in glass quality and IMHO, better than the Nikon. It's sleek and light, looks right on a M-7.

I did all my early years of hunting with a fixed 4 power Weaver. Dad had a 2-7 Leupold. Either would do just fine, though for a kid I think the fixed power might be a good way to go till he gets used to hunting.

Conquest.
While many of us learned with a fixed power, I'd argue fixed powers are better suited to experienced hunters (although perhaps young man's eyes). Get him to leave it at 3x at first, and only dial it up when about to shoot.

One good thing about variables, they can be set at a lower power, making it easier for a beginner.

Wide8: The correct answer to your quiry regarding the Nikon of the Zeiss on your sons Model 7 is, NEITHER! The correct answer is a Leupold 2x7 variable. Buy American or your son will have a hard time finding a job! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Sounds like a slick little rig, I'd put a 4x(FX-II or K4) on it and call it good.
