I've been thinking of getting another 45-70 lately. I had a Marlin 1895GS for a while, but traded it off a couple of years ago. I stumbled across a Henry yesterday and decided to get it.
Most of the criticism I've seen online has to do with: A) Price. Basically, I paid what another guide gun plus XS sights would cost. This came set up with the XS sights already B) How it's loaded. This doesn't bother me, because it's nothing but a hunting rifle. I'll just drop 4 in the tube, lever one, and go hunting.
It seems pretty well built. I'll get to the range this weekend and see how it shoots.

I like the loading feature on the Henry. Makes unloading a little simpler/safer as well, and it's easier on the brass.

I have the Henry 45/70. The first time I took it to range the outer magazine tube was loose and after shooting about 3 405gr shells, the outer tube was sticking out about 4" beyond the muzzle. I called Henry customer service. They sent me a prepaid shipping label to send the rifle back to the factory. I had the rifle back in less than 10 days. It has worked perfectly every since. It loves the 405gr round nose flat point from S&S Castings.

I shot it with factory 300 grain Remingtons at 50 yards a couple of weeks ago just to get the sights adjusted to a load. I'll probably go stretch it out some this weekend to 100, maybe 200 from field positions.
I'm about to start casting for my 45 Colt Vaquero. I guess I'll get set up for 45-70, also.

Bought a Henry last month but have not yet shot it. I ran a bunch of dummy rounds through it and it feeds and fumctions perfectly. Trigger is ok, just a tiny bit of creep and breaks about 5.5 pounds. Fit and finish is excellent and action is smooth. Rear ghost sight is to big for my tastes but XS sells replacements for cheap. I bought the next two smaller sizes but might put a Nikon 1x4 on it that I found in the safe. Personally I love the magazine tube.
If you watch Gunbrokers you can sometimes pick one of these up for under $700. Henry also offers one of the best warranties in the business. I will be buying more in the future.
My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Mine was under $700. He had the price tags switched between it and another rifle. But he said that if I wanted it, he would sell it to me for what was on the tag. Saved me about $50.

Ran across a used Henry 45/70 at the LGS the other day. Whats a used one worth in pretty good condition?
Farming, or anything else for that matter, is easy when your plow's a keyboard and you're a 1000 miles from the field.

Can you use hot reloads like in the Marlin? I've read that you could, but 500's may be too long to chamber. Of coarse, this was on the internet, so I have no first hand knowledge. I'll probably keep mine pretty tame. Just a deer and hog gun.
