Being weak willed in the matter of firearms and working part time in a gun/pawn shop seems conducive to "stuff" coming home with me. Today I acquired for a reallllyyyyy GOOD price a Winchester 94 in 30-30 with a 3.6 million serial number which means a manufacture date of 1971.The early seventies were when Winchester committed the awful mistake of using a steel alloy for receivers. This stuff surface rusted and would not take a reblue. It had an awful side mount scope mount with a Tasco 4X.This came off immediately.The receiver has mucho "PATINA".
It is what it is. I intend to clean it really good and shoot it iron sighted.
I love a good 30-30 and hunt a lot with my 1947 dated Stevens Model 325 bolt action in 30-30.
There's just something good about the feel of a good lever gun.
Stan in SC Way to go Stan! I have a Marlin 30-30 that I bought on a bordem trip to scheels 25 years ago. I have shot it maybe 2 times but like you, I just seem to like that little lever gun.

Hey Stan, would you consider one of the new coatings for that receiver rather than bluing? I'm not up to date on what's the best these days but I know some of these new coatings are amazing. This kershaw knife that gophergunner gave me over a year ago has a black coating on the steel blade as well as the aluminum body. I have it one every day, use it every day. The clip is the only thing showing any wear, anodized steel clip. I don't know what the coating is on the rest of the knife but it's amazing.

Dave, the Ceracote is really good, quite durable and easy to apply. I considered it but right now I think I will leave it in the "used" look. It isn't bad. I rubbed it down good with quad ought steel wool and oil. The wood has some little dents and dings but looks pretty good. I will load some good 170 grain round nose bullet loads for it. It will be a good companion piece for my .357 Blackhawk which I bought earlier this year.
Like I said working in a gun/pawn shop stuff follows you home.

That combo sounds like a great woods hunting set up Stan! I like it a lot. I'm going to spill the beans here.... I've never had or hinted with a 30-30.

I had a bolt action 30-30 for 1 day over 12 years ago. I've never owned a lever 30-30 Not for lack of interest, I'll have one some day.

I will too. I'm 3 deep in deer rifles right now and will loose one in the next year or two for the boy. Maybe then.

My first deer rifle in 1974 was a Marlin lever action 30-30. I hunted with that rifle for over 20 years. Killed a lot of deer with it. Went to a bolt .308 in 1995. Didn't use the 30-30 much for a long time and like a goof sold it.

Only 3 deep, you better stock up Tom!!! Best to have at least 3 back-ups, never know what might happen.
We've got a Marlin 30-30 that was my wife's before we got married. It hasn't been touched since I brought home a Model 7 in 7-08.

I have a pre-64 Win 94 with a Lyman peep sight. Very handy woods rifle but just do not use it much. I do not plan on selling it but would consider loaning it to some of the MN members of this thread if they wanted to try it out. I have a Marlin 336 ER in .356 Win that I use when I want a lever rifle for MN deer hunting. PM if interested.

Let me know if you are interested in a Marlin 336 LTD stainless 30-30. It's the 16.5" barrel, straight laminate-stocked special run. It came with fire-sights too. It has a Wild West trigger and ejector. I like the rifle, but I have too many deer rifles right now, and it would fund some nice homebrewing stuff for my shop.....

Well I'm slightly over 3 deep on deer rifles but another lever gun wouldn't hurt.
I only have a MXLR in 450 Marlin right now. A 30-30 or something might be fun.
Maybe I can trade off my crappy old model 54 Whinny for one.....

Tom, if you're coming over turkey hunting this weekend make sure you and the kids have rubber boots and water proof clothing. The wood are water logged.
Been raining every day since Sunday here. Only had about 2" total but combine that with the snow melt and you've got a soggy, muddy mess.

Bill, We are coming the weekend after this one. We do all have rubber boots. I just bought some Muck Boots last weekend. My Lacrosse Burly 800gm thinsilate were too heavy. These muck boots are sweet!

How many pair does a guy need? I can use the Burly's if it's cold. The Burly's are also longer up the leg than the mucks, but the Muck's are 100% easier to put on and take off. That was the big reason for getting them. The Burly's were killing my knee.

I've got a pair of Muck Artic Pro's that I use for deer hunting. They are great. May pick up a pair of uninsulated ones for early fall use.
Still have my old Lacrosse Burleys that I used in Alaska in 2001.
