You guys who shoot 170s, do they eject straight out or back, real question is, would they eject brass into the face/down the shirt of a lefty?

Memory says not a problem for a lefty, like maybe the savage 30 shotgun?

In between periods Gary so I went and threw a spent shell in my 35 Rem, they eject pretty much straight out.

Forum should have a Rim shot icon. Thanks for checking Joe. My oldest son isn't much into guns but likes deer hunting (I think this makes him a typical Minnesota deer hunter) and he is a lefty. He likes the low recoil of the 30-30, and likes a scope. Ive been thinking of getting him a 219, but a 170 sounds like a another good ,older Savage option.

Awesome little deer gun.
My buddy got his nephew started out on a 170 carbine in 30-30. It was one of the later ones with the running deer engraved on the side of it. Saw it in the local gun shop at $220 but I had a 35 Rem already so I told my bud about it. I think he told me his nephew took his first deer (a doe) with it the season before last.

I had a .30-30 in mint shape but it wouldn't eject after firing unless you pushed the slide forward and then pulled it back. I believe this is a fairly common issue so make sure before you buy one. Otherwise I would still have it. It shot well and carried pretty easy.

I knew a guy who won a couple cast bullet matches with one, it was that accurate. But it had other issues that overrode that.

The 170's are shotgun actions with most of the parts being common with some shotgun models and not all 170's have the same parts. There are several changes that show in the parts list including different ejectors for later guns - don't know if the ejection problem some mention could happen with all versions or just the earlier version with the original ejectors. The reports on the 35 Remington suggest they do not have the problems associated with some 30-30's, but the 35 was only offered in later guns so it might be because of that and not just because it's a different cartridge.
Early guns also had a tendency for the forearm to rattle - later versions had a small spring loaded cross bar in front of the forearm that takes out the slack.

Had a a 170 in 35 Remington 30 or so years ago. Never had any problems with it, and found it be remarkably accurate. I shoot a long gun left-handed and the 170 does eject cases straight out.

My 170 is very temperamental on brass. I can not use brass fired from another rifle so I keep my cases segregated. It is a shooter though, 3 shots under an inch with Hornady LeveRevolution ammo.I am also a lefty and have no issues with ejection.
