Anyone have any experience with these guns? Our options for fun guns is limited in New Yorkistan and it looked like it could be useful around the homestead.

Takes AR-15 mags, folds in half, and comes with ghost ring sights and a weaver top rail.

Yeah - buy spare firing pins, and don't expect a long service life.

Had one "A" Model for a while, and a co-worker had the same one. His would break the firing pin about every six months. Kel-Tec customer service was great, however, they sent parts out fast.

I was missing the rear sight, they sent one out at no charge, and priority shipping.

It's a truck gun, and will work if nothing else is allowed. I'd get the aftermarket "quick-change" takedown pins:

I had mine for about six months, no major feeding issues that I recall. The sights are ho-hum at best. About all I remember about it, wasn't a horrible solution.

"Safariman" has one, he may be along to chime in.

I had one for about three years, I would use it to ride motorcycle into the county and shoot. I had no major malfunctions, with the exception of getting the hand-guards to stay in place, and it cycled various ammo just fine, I found it to be more accurate than I expected.

I never had problems with the firing pins, though the current owner has had to replace them three times. He also had the butt-stock develop a crack after dropping it on frozen ground.

As a left handed person I loved the charging handle locate!

If I had limited options I think I would buy one, I bought that one because I was broke and wanted to have a 223.

I figure it can be useful on the tractor, in the car, and on the Quad while doing various things. Fitted with a HALO sight, it would be quick on target and easy to use.

some folks can get to be snobs on things. But Kel Tec, for what it is, has impressed me over the years.

Not my top pick but sure isn't a bad pick for folks on a budget. And dealing with stupid laws.

I used to be a bit of a snob, thought anyone that hunted with a firearm was lazy, because I really enjoyed bowhunting and the effort in it, but filled my tags regularly... No more, I won't comment unless i"ve tried it.

The SU16 would sure suffice, not my top pick as I mentioned, but then again there are always different tools for different jobs and I woudl not want to take my match rifle on the tractor or in the truck for a beater gun either....

I sent a 9mm KelTec pistol back 2 times for the same thing, trigger locked back when gun discharged, it was a single shot gun.

My experience (and what I have seen others go through) with Kel-Tec is the following;
1.)Don't by a new product launch from them, let them work out the kinks, I guess all new products have this problem, but I think other manufacturers work out more kinks before product launch, maybe? To this end the SU-16 has been around a long time.

2.) Don't spend the money on a Kel-Tec and expect the something it isn't, you will not be getting a LWRC for Kel-Tec money.

3.) Do expect some interaction with Kel-Tec service department, which are very friendly.

4.) Be willing to walk away, have a backup plan, for instance could you work with your socialist overlords to let you have a SKS or a VZ-58 with a small cap magazine?

5.) Expect a decent recreational gun and be pleasantly surprised, I have shot seven or eight of sub-2000s and I must say that one friend brought one and it ran like a dream and looked pristine, another friend brought one and it looked like a kid built it but it functioned well (lots of sharp edges), another look great wouldn't shoot. Eventually Kel-Tec will make it right, the question you always have to ask is what is it worth to you in the end.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm trying to do some horse trading with the dealer towards the gun, so we'll see what happens.

The extremely light weight and folding capability is very attractive for my needs. Not looking to put 1,000s of rounds thru it, just looking for a farm gun/survival type gun.

The reply was not directed at you, I wish this site would knock that stuff off assuming you are typing to the last poster.

That being said I've sent 2 zeiss scopes back too... and while not all of evetrything is good, its fairly well known if you want a keltec pocket pistol you get the 32 or 380, not the 9. At least around here it is.

And yes, you can look at materials and engineering... but bottom line is not all folks have the same needs.

Be like a once a year deer hunter having to buy a custom rifle, when in the life of his gun he MIGHT fire 100 rounds through it. Vs me, I could fire well over 100 every day for days at a time....

Or tell NYS to GFY. And drive to Pa, buy an AR and take it home

The one I had was functional, dont recall it ever skipping a beat, but it was a 4moa gun with open sights. I liked the fact it could fold in half and be shoved in a duffel bag or backpack and not draw a second glance.

I saw somewhere that a company is making a "one piece" stock and pistol grip together that fits the AR and makes it legal. One has to replace the "flash hider" with a muzzle break. One also must replace the magazines with 10 rounders. The stock is real funky looking.

well, I bought the Kel-Tec SU-16 and I like it.

Good trigger,
very handy,
very light,
and easy to use.

I got to the range yesterday and even though the conditions were less than ideal. Using a handload [25grs of X-terminator under a 55gr fmj with a wolf srmp] it shot very well.

It was very windy with gusts up to 15-20mph and it did this at 100yds off a front sandbag rest.

and my last two shots of the day.

not bad at all for a 4.5lb gun with plain old plinking ammo.

Anyone looking for a lightweight camping gun, truck gun, or knock around gun, check out the Kel-Tec SU-16.

I owned one for about a year, then sold it. It's an awesome concept, but taking it down and reassembling it for cleaning is a huge chore. Also, mine wasn't completely reliable.

well, in 50 rounds at the range, with no cleaning or oiling before going, the gun functioned without a hitch. I don't figure is as a battle rifle, but the compact handy PC style makes for a usefull gun in New Yorkistan.

If mine were reliable like yours, I'd probably have kept it, regardless of the pain in the butt it is to take down for routine maintenance.

Wow! 1.5 inch group at 100 yards with range ammo and open sights! That's better than my $1500 MP10 with LaRue mount and 3.5-10x scope!

Sometimes its the sows ear and silk purse thing.

an MP 10 that couldn't keep up with MOA would have me frustrated.
