That rifle is from the first year of production, 1907. If you fire it slowly it will do about ~1.5" at 50 yards, using the tang sight. Let the barrel heat up and it strings vertically. I need to do some more work on the brass, though, to get it trimmed to consistent lengths. I also used CCI 41 primers, which may or may not be exactly best for it.

Hawk makes bullets, with a couple of variations. Quality Cartridge Co makes brass (need trimming), and Jamison has started up producing them again. I have 200 cases for it. It is interesting to note the .351 shares the same rim size as a .30 Remington AR, and the 6.8 SPC, so the shell holders are the same.

The magazines are not drop free, and not staggered, so the standard mag holds 5 rounds. There were 10 round "police" mags, which now go for about $200 on Gunbroker.

The firing pin was stuck on this rifle; which I discovered in the course of cleaning; I expect that's why I was able to buy it as cheaply as I did. Some fresh CLP got it cleaned up. The action is blowback operated, not a locked breech. The breechblock is a massive forging, which might cost $500 to make today.

(this is my other 1907, which killed many a gator on a South Texas ranch)

Development continues with it; it is certainly the equal of a .357 magnum carbine. They were popular among some police and prison guards in their day, but even if I to find a 10 round mag for it at a decent price, I think it will be assigned to 4 legged pests in the future. smile

That long springy thing at the bottom of the pic is the fun and games portion of re assembly.

France tested them for trench assault in the Great War with some making it to the front. The balance of the American used rifles stayed in the air corps. The idea was to issue them to aerial observers in both balloons and in winged aircraft as means of defense.

He just stuck the case in a collet, got the tool on location, and went straight into the case.

Stick a stop in the collet, get your zeros established, and you could knock them out like shelling peas.

The article I saw came out before the .357 Maximum, and the converted .357 cases were a bit too short,..but you could make them from .357 Maximum brass and have them dimensionally correct all over.

yep, I nearly bought some last year; there's a couple guys that were selling them, but then both QCC and Jamison started making them again.

Nice. Reminds me of my Taurus 63, which is an exact copy of the Winchester 63.

yep, Wiki says the French bought about 2800 of them, the Russians 500, and the Brits a hundred or so. So I guess you can call it milsurp smile

At some point after chrono'g it, I'll have to figure out the sights, as it's shooting about 8" high at 50 yards, with the tang sight lowered all the way.

And work up the nerve to take the front end apart smile

A gunshop in my area has a box of 351 ammo on display in one of its cases, I believe it is Remington. I have seen 351 ammo with
a picture of a skunk on the box, but dont remember the maker.

I know I can trim back .351 brass to .35 length.
Thanks for the component info, I'll look into it.
I'm hoping .351 dies will seat the bullet deep enough to work in my .35.

Isn't that stuff from old western scrounger? With skunk on box?

yes, OWS used that logo on some of their stuff. I think I have
some .38 ACP ammo from them with that logo

I have some original ammo - will be interesting to chrono it.

Had to chime in... I didn't read the whole chain of posts, but I was lucky to get a 1907 in excellent condition S/N 13XXX a couple months ago. I have been looking for some reasonably priced .351 ammo (relatively speaking) and it finally came in today. I don't think I have been so eager to put a rifle in my shoulder since I first acquired my 1890 some time ago. I only put 4 shots down range. I have to say....very nice. Very nice. The weight of the rifle and its solid feel provided a very comfortable experience. I took my time, relaxed and took in the full experience. I can only say I wish this ammo was easier to get and cheaper. I'm sure you all enjoy your 1907's just as much. Consider me another satisfied antique Winchester collector.
By the way, I got my ammo through Selway Armory - Jamison Legacy Grade .351 WSL (180 gr) @ $29.99 per box of 20.
And for a small amount of bragging rights (i'm not usually the lucky type), I stumbled on to two boxes of mint condition original Western 351SL Lubaloy boxes (50rds ea) for $70 per box. That is actually cheaper than what the Jamison cost me. Though these may never get used.

I've got the big brother to that one, the 1910 401. Had to order a new forend for it as mine was broken like a lot of them seem to be. It just arrived last week so when I get home on my R&R hopefully I'll have some time to fit it and get it shooting again. Had to make a brass catching net out of a butterfly net. It really likes to fling that expensive brass.

Next trip to the range should be fairly eclectic for me - the .351, a .300 Blackout, and a XP100 7mm BR... smirk
