Gentlemen,
Briggs and Stratton, Quantum Engine, just won't start...
Carb has been pulled apart and cleaned and reassembled...
Magnito function has been verified by moving it to another motor to test...
New Spark Plug....
Using either ether or just priming it with fuel, by pulling handle slowly, engine seems it is trying to fire, but that is it...
Have broken 2 handles, pulling it quicker to get it to fire up...( not to mention rough on the hands even with a glove on) The piston just seems to lock up and jerks to a stop, snapping the rope right out of my hand.
Fresh Oil...
Thought I would ask those in the "Know", before looking at replacing engine.. local shops would charge half the price of a new engine just to tell me if this one is still good or not...
Thanks for any input in advance...
cheers seafire

Timing way off, maybe a sheared flywheel key?

Dirt-dobber build a nest in the exhaust.? (Happened on an ATV, wouldn't run till she was uncorked) exhaust is back firing out of it, so that should be clear, but did take that off and tried to see if that was the problem... not long ago, I had to scrap another engine... bees actually managed to build a nest INSIDE the carb, and got down into the combustion chamber.... will look at the potential of a timing issue tho... I admit, about an hour ago, I was about ready to take it around the corner, out into the woods, and event my anger on it with a 30/06......

Has it run since flywheel/key changed, or did that get changed in hopes of fixing it? You need three basics: Timed spark Compression Fuel

Sometimes we forget that engines have two types of timing ignition and valve.

Is the fuel turned on? If you have spark, fuel and compression.....it should fire.

yeah Sean,
I am well aware of the 3 simple things needed....that is why it is frustrating me....
and NO it hasn't run since the key way change.. which from your boys suggestions make me wonder if it is a timing issue....
don't know about you boys, when I get to the point of frustration with something, I loose about 90 % of my concentration ability, and feel like beating something mechanical or electrical that won't work with a hammer before I trash it....

ya know, that could be a valid reason.... my son was the last one to use it last season.... and sadly like his mother, when she breaks something, she has no idea how it happened, or who did it... all she knows is it wasn't her.... typical female, typical teenager...

Was it running this year before today? no it hasn't this year... was using my other mower, but it has started burning oil.. smokes like a 72 Vega with 250K on it when you start it up... Mower was given to me by a friend when she moved back to Boston the year before.. it was only two years old and low miles at the time...

Three planned actions...
1. Go check Timing
2. Go load up 30/06 shell if timing issue doesn't work
3. Call up Northern Hydraulics, and order new motor...

If you cleaned the bad gas outta the carb and made sure the inerds were not schalacked up and re-assembled it correctly and made sure your tank and fuel line aren't full of schit and are getting spark out of the plug when you pull the rope, you got me.

"The piston seems to lock up and jerk to a stop" It's got me wondering if your mower has an engine brake to kill the motor when you remove your hands. If so, the cable may need adjusting to stay fully released. It's a weird one for sure.

You said you replaced the flywheel? Is the flywheel timed correctly for the motor?

I thought that was everyone's SOP. I don't believe were I in your shoes I'dve even mentioned it for fear of being labeled captain obvious. (grin) I once had a company computer keyboard that was possessed by the "touch/brush against the mouse pad and I'll delete this document" demon. That one got mashed into plastic flour via 2# hammer and scattered to the wind.

Some small engines have a compression release ground on the cam profile that requires the valves to be gapped right at spec or they won't start.
