G'day folks, well I think it's time to scratch an itch I've had for a black powder rifle.
I've decided on a Pedersoli Missouri River Hawken, question is do I get the 50cal 1:24 twist or go a 45 1:47 twist?

I doubt I'll ever take any larger game with it, it may well be used for a vermin popper on the odd occasion. It'll more than likely be a fun/ paper puncher, so I'm leaning towards the 45, having the option of running round balls and 250g maxis.

Thoughts?

Cheers, Scott.

I picked up a like-new T/C .45 Hawken this past winter for pretty much the same use. I also ordered a lead pot and a Lee 250 grain REAL mold as well as a couple hundred RBs.

Those Pedersoli Hawkens look very nice. I once owned one of their .54 Mortimer flintlocks, and once I modified the touch hole, it was dead reliable and very accurate. They make nice stuff.

What propellants are available to you down there?

I'm pretty new to this but as far as I know we have the same access as you guys, 2F and 3F are easily got.

Cheers, Scott.

Actually, it's not that easy here for real BP. New Federal regs make it very expensive and difficult for the average gunshop to carry BP. Most serious users order on line now, I believe. There is a distributer nearby because of the NMLRA facility in Gore, VA.

I've been using 777 in my .50 sidelock, as it seems to prefer it. I haven't fired my .45 yet, but have enough Goex on hand for testing.

I second the .45 also. The fast twist .50 will be for sabots or heavy conicals, neither of which you need. Also, the .45 Maxis will work on game up to 200 pounds without too much fuss.

Yep it's the same here, our local gunshos don't have black powder, but we do have several guys who specialise in all things black powder in my local area so I can get it.

Cheer, Scott.

Thanks for the info mate, that was my way of thinking too. ;-)

Cheers, Scott.
