A South African Game Warden wrote and article on "stopping rifles" years ago in Rifle Mag. He said guys there were about evenly divided between using a 375 or larger bolt gun and an FAL. Both were issued for carry, and Cape Buff was typically what they had to go put down with an occasional lion.

What bullet did my bud use on the Brownie? It was factory Remington is all I can remember. We were both living in the barracks at Ft Wainwright in 79 and the rifle and ammo were purchased in Fairbanks. My guess is a Cor-loct of 200+ grains.

Hey, I killed a ground squirrel that had climbed a dead tree with a .45-70 bolt action once, even though I completely missed it! Yes its true, the squirrel tumbled out of the tree stone dead, all I found was a tiny drop of blood from its nose. Figured that big old bullet passing by must have killed it from the shock wave traveling up to its brain. Try that with your puny .308 Windsock or whatever.

The largest animal I've killed with my .308 Remington carbine was a bull moose in Saskatchewan, Canada. Two shots through the chest did the job efficiently for me. I shot 180 grain Remington core-lokt ammo.

Not all that long ago I read that the .308 Win had overtaken the '06 in popularity.

Ask me & I'd say the .280 Rem is the best cartridge for hunting ALL North American big game. Ask me again & I'd say the .308 Win is second best.

The .308 Winchester is the only cartridge I have ever known to be uniformly praised and traded off by hunters after they gained some experience with it.

It is a compact no frills achiever that can be built or bought in compact rifle formats and heavy barrel tack drivers. With modern bullets, it would take imagination and ignorance to slander it.

I would use my 308 on any NA game that I would ever hope to hunt. This includes elk.
