Anybody pulled a barrel on a RAR yet?
I'm thinking of doing a little tinkering and was wondering of anybody has tackled this feat. It has a barrel nut -- even a small cut out/recess on the bottom of the nut. That would make it easy for indexing.
I'm not sure if anybody is making an aftermarket barrel for the rifle yet -- any knowledge of that out there? If not, I don't mind sending one off to set up a contour. I'm thinking of Benchmark, ER Shaw or Shilen for threading and chambering purposes. I want to keep the cost of the barrel down. Nothing too extravagant. I'd also like for the contour to finish a tad heavier at the muzzle for 338 and 358 bores.
Thoughts?

I consider the Ruger RAR a good truck gun as is but I don't like the narrow slot for a receiver opening, I like to be able to fill the magazine with it in the action so I would not do much changing on these rifles. A paint job, good scope and sling are all I would do to one.

There is one on Sniper Hide that was rebarreled to 6 or 6.5x284 in the classified section. You might want to look there and ask the seller a few questions.

Not much room in the stock for a barrel of any heavier contour - there no meat in the sides to widen out.

If you are going for 338 or 358, then consider a rebore, it will be signifigantly less than the cost of a rebarrel! this guy is a bit of a small legend here and elsewhere: http://35caliber.com/2.htmlThis guy has a quite a rep as well: http://www.cutrifle.com/reboring.htmlEither way, you are under well under $300. ER Shaw quoted a rebarrel for me and it was $340, so there ya go.

Check with IT & D gunsmithing...they carry Douglas barrels and are pretty reasonable with a good turn around...
I'm getting ready to put a barrel on a Marlin XL7, chambered in 6mm Rem....picked up a Green Mountain barrel from Midway for $92, and am having a local gunsmith thread and chamber it... ( Mark Skaggs Gunsmithing).. he charges $85 for that....
after that have a few sources to Cerakote it.. haven't figured out if I am going to do that or Parkerize it..

I wouldn't want a heavier contour all the way back, just decreasing taper from the end of the stock to the muzzle. Mine finishes at .570"ish and I'd want a little more beef for 33's and 35's. I thought about sending one to JES, but the factory muzzle diameter concerns me. Seafire -- I no longer do business with IT&D.

Thoughts? When I purchased a RAR about a year back, I inquired at PACNOR if they had any plans to market pre-fit barrels for the RAR. Response I got was that they were considering it. RAR has not been listed on the PN pre-fit list as of yet. More inquiries of interest to PN may goose them to do so.

Looks as if NO is the answer, of course in true Campfire Fashion it took 6 posts and 500 words without the actual one word answer.

Steelie - perhaps it's too new for the after-market to weigh in? Marketing and Cost Accounting need to do their thing - ya know. Homesteader.

What a wonderful message board this would be if everyone replied with one-word yes/no responses! Ahh, if only.

Actually, no need in this now. The RAR Predator addresses some of the options I was wanting. 6.5 Creedmoor....check. Heavier contour for 338 Federal and 358 Winchester......check. Now $250 spent with JES gets you there.
