Recently I decided I'd get some 225 grain Barnes VOR-TX in .338 Win Mag to use on bear, elk, mule deer, and moose. But after informing a fellow hunter I know of my descesion while shooting the breeze, he informed me that while my ammo choice would work well on bear, moose, and elk, he said that that bullet choice in that caliber and weight may not expand properly on mule deer and do to that may not always give me a satisfactory kill. I told him his claim was entirely unfounded. But since I have nothing to do tonight, I thought I would bother you guys anyway. So what do you guys think? Is his claim entirely unfounded, or is there some truth to what he is saying?

His contention is that a 338 bullet that starts in the area of 2,700 fps is not going to do well on a mule deer? Must be some very rugged deer where he hunts. If I was you I would be perfectly confident with that load.

Since the bullets will do most of their expanding in first inch or so of deer, why don't you ask him to explain that is simple terms for a little amusement.

Your friend needs a new hobby. Clearly his expertise must be elsewhere?

I would be worried if there were deer like that around.

Sounds to me like he is saying that bullet is a little tough for deer which many would agree, but as was mentioned above the bullet will expand as soon as it touches fir so no need to worry.
I personally would choose something softer, but if monometals are your thing & yer rifles likes this ammo go ahead w/o worries.
I'd definitely be favoring shoulder shots on deer w/ that cartridge/bullet combo.
