Will a 375 caliber 270gr. Hornady interlock be too fragiable traveling 2777 fps. out the muzzle on elk?

nope,...won't be frangible either.

of course like all "cartridge/bullet" comparisons it depends on impact velocity...although even at 10 yards I'm sure it would penetrate enough to kill an elk...:-)

I have killed better than a dozen elk with that bullet and the only one I remember running slightly better than 100 yards was a bull that had already been hit with a 30-06 and he was trying to leave the country. Almost everything else was DRT. The only one I ever remember recovering was in the neck of a big ole bull that I shot at just over 250 yards. I continue to use that bullet.

I was hoping to use that bullet in my .375, but it just hated them. Maybe the 300g will work should I ever get the time.

I shoot that bullet out of my 375 Ruger Alaskan, 2600+ fps. Its killed 2 bulls, 1 at 376 and another right around 100. Great elk bullet.

Thanks. I shot some factory ammo out of my 20" Ruger Guide Gun and shot really well. Shot a 5 shot string over Chronograph and was only 15fps. extreme spread. Averaged at 2777fps, with a good group. Was loading the 300gr. Interlock round nose at 2488fps but Hornady discontinued that bullet for their DGX and DGS series bullets.

You guys who've used them on elk, got good exit wounds or did the bullet stay inside?

Just asking because in my very informal testing, the 270 Hornady spire point was very accurate, but also seemed kind of "soft" or fragile compared to some other .375" bullets I've used.

Thanks for the info. I've got quite a pile of .375" Hornady bullets.

700xcr, It should work well for your application. I used it for several years and was happy, both with performance and accuracy. When I stepped up to a .375AI I found that on "close" shots, penetration suffered. They held together well, but shed a lot of weight. Large frontal area plus light weight = loss of penetration. Of course I'm from the school of two holes to leak from!!! memtb

No it will not. I nailed a bull Elk at 10 yards with one from my 378 WBy at close to 3200 fps and found the bullet under the far hide with 44% retention.

Did you have to resize that bullet before you used it again? smile
