I applied, interviewed and was offered a job in Charleston SC. I work in NW PA but live in NY. I am going to have to run 2 households until my house sells in NY and as far as the job, I am really putting my current station in a bind as I am the only trainer and it will take months to replace me. The positives outweigh the negatives, my kids are all grown but we have young grandkids we'll miss. I do get about 5 weeks of vacation a year and the kids are starting to spread out too. I am 10-12 years from retirement and our goal is to retire in South Carolina. What to do......

If the goal is to retire in SC then this sounds like a great opportunity to start that transition.

We love the area from N Myrtle Beach to Murrels Inlet and this is as close as we could get with my job so I don't think we'll be that disappointed...and I have heard nothing but good things about the Charleston area.

Was in the same situation 8yrs.ago.Born and lived in NC Pa for 44 years and picked up and moved to Texas. First few years were tough but best move I ever made. Do it and don't look back.

Lets see. New York that is getting closer and closer to Nazi Germany or Charleston South Carolina where I walked the streets at midnight and felt safe and saw no panhandlers or even cops.
had folks sitting on front porches calling out greetings as we walked by.

run don't walk but run south.

No brainer, anytime you can move to a better place, get a better job and have someone pay for it, you jump on the opportunity.

Just expect that it will take you two years to adapt to your new location. And never, ever tell people in the South, well that's not the way we did it up North shocked

SC would not be my choice for retirement, but it's got to beat the hell out of New York.

With a little change: A Siberian gulag would not be my choice for retirement, but it's got to beat the hell out of New York.

Yep, still true. grin

Here's a good stat page on Charleston.

The crime stats are interesting. In 2002 it had a rating of 522. (the higher the number, the more crime,..national average 296)

But in 2012, the number had dropped to 194.

Sounds like a pretty good place to be if you don't mind having to reason with hurricane season.

hmmm,...the more I read about Charleston, the more appealing it sounds.

I wonder if a washed up toolmaker with a foul disposition could find work there.

Or,...more importantly,..I wonder if my wife could find work there?

I'm tired of workin' any damn way.

I only visited NY once and Charleston, SC once. It would be a no brainer for me unless I had a problem with humidity. Charleston would be my choice without a doubt.

Charleston is a LOVELY place. I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Hell week was a MFer in Charleston....

Other than that, I'd take it over Yankeeland any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

We can't get out of NY for another five years, but we sure will ASAP. NY vs. Charleston SC, the same Charleston SC where my old NAVY buddy from over 40 years ago who drove up for my wedding last year? An easy day's drive and ferry ride to the Outer Banks... I would have no problem making the decision if I were able to right now.
