Mom had a favorite saying about a top-notch friend of ours- "He could catch a fish on a cigarette butt". I was doing so well at a little Nevada reservoir (57 fish before lunch) that I thought it ripe to bring out my Master's Thesis. Here's the result: For you gun-gaack guys: Salem regular, tied on a long enough hook with white thread, sans blue tape. It began as a dry, wilted into a stripped emerger. I had three strikes (too little gape), brought one near the kayak but lost him, and then brought in this little fella. No surprise, by the way, that Aztecs ruled the day. Elsewhere during that trip I caught my biggest yet, a 20" trout with girth. On a copy of Sitka deer's Thunder Creek style fly from the '09 (?) Swap. Two fishers, 20 water hours combined- that one fish. But worth it.

That is a shame introducing youngsters to smoking that way!

So, Art, I reverse-engineered that effective TC-style fly. Isn't it about time I asked for your recipe?
Those little bass loved a version of that fly larger than your swap one, with red flash instead of violet, but the gape wasn't large enough to reliably hook them. So I just now tied up one on a size 4 3xShort hook. It ought to be perfect!

After a day of angling the Yellowstone about 3 miles down and off side of the highway below Fishing Bridge, we stopped at the bridge to simply watch the trout below. It had been a good day, but we had swapped out patterns many times chasing hatches.
Just for giggles I dropped in a filter a smoker had left on the bridge, and about a 20" cutthroat calmly rose and sucked it down. Seems they were also eager for popcorn and some sort of cheese snack.
