The Indiana DNR is thinking about a spring season, but who knows when/if it will happen.

Our limit is ten squirrels, what is the daily limit allowed where you guys hunt?
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

Indiana is 5 daily, and 10 in possession.

maddog What is the purpose of a spring season? Seems to me it would decrease squirrels numbers significantly.

The reality is that it probably wouldn't have much impact on the population, because of little hunting pressure. There aren't near the squirrel hunters today, compared to 30 yrs. ago. Also, squirrels, in Indiana basically breed twice a yr. Dec./early Jan., and have the kits in March. If the put the spring season off until after turkey season[mid May], the young would be weaned. The other breeding season is June/early July and drop them about 45 days later, which puts that right at our season opener[Aug 15]. Other states such as Missouri and Arkansas start their seasons in May/June and run thru Feb. of the next yr. Again I think the impact would be minimal, due to lack of participation.

Thanks Mike. Kinda makes sense. Saw a study years ago on dove mortality rates- IIRC it was 80% per year, whether they were hunted or not. With the fecundity rate of squirrels Id bet its the same...

In the "for what it's worth" category..... A couple a fellows that posted on this thread, last fall, indicated they'd like to get a H&R Sportster .22 rifle single shot. Just read, in the last 2 weeks, that they are dropping all rimfire barrels from the handi rifle lineup. Sooo....if you still want one, you better do it quick. They are still out there, but are getting very hard to find. I'm telling you, since Remington/Freedom group got ahold of Marlin/H&R, they've done nothing but go downhill..... maddog

Was hoping but my activities director (mawsquaw) said we're headed to Colorado after Wyoming. Wish I'd packed a .22 for all the prairie dawgs I saw at Custer. Would probably have got put under the jail.. Gunshops along the way that I need to hit?
