Salmonella; Thanks for the horse thread sir, it's somehow timely for me as I was having a coffee this morning looking over the place where our ranch bred gelding is buried in our yard - remembering the years we had horses fondly. One of the many things in life that puzzle me these days is how indistinct some details are becoming, so when I say how many years we had the horses - without looking it's a bit of a guesstimate now, but I believe it was 17 years. We actually picked up this Appy mare for my good wife, but they didn't really connect and she and I did. For close to a decade of hunting seasons, she and I would come down from the mountain behind our house looking like this. All were solo hunts, save this morning when I took my backpack hunting partner for his one and only horse hunt. So it was that he snapped this grainy shot of me finishing tying on his meat buck mulie. My wife took this photo of me training the mare for gunfire early on in the process and it ended up to be a bit of a personal favorite for me. The inside joke with my family is that when I was a kid on the flatland of Saskatchewan I used to draw pictures of men on horseback in the mountains hunting.... despite the fact that I'd never so much as seen a real mountain at that point in my life. When my good wife and I drifted west, settled here in the interior BC mountains and owned a couple horses for that stretch of our lives, I was blessed beyond deserving to live out those childhood dreams. Thanks for letting me share them with you all here this morning and even more so thanks for bringing the fond memories back for me. All the best to you and yours Salmonella. Dwayne

Dwayne, how'd the horse take to the gunfire? Was at a friend's place and we were hunting off a couple of his horses. A few hours into the ride, the elk country improved and I asked him if you could shoot off the horse I was riding. He said "Sure! Once."....

rockinbar; Top of the morning to you sir, I really liked the photos you posted of the action shots - shots plural meaning I guess here! The Appy was an interesting personality in that she very quickly trusted me in most goofy things I'd try with her. I started with .22 blanks, then Long Rifles, then cast bullet loads in an '06 and finally full power loads - but to be clear never while on her. I'd say, "Noise, Noise!" as I pulled the rifle from the scabbard and she'd visibly brace herself for it. As I say she was a complex equine in that she'd lick an idling chainsaw if I was running it and would eat apples from my bloody hands while I was packing deer quarters on her. One of my tricks was that she received apples for treats when hunting, so she was more than OK with a deer buying the farm as it meant goodies for her. That said, I never did get the sorrel gelding OK with packing meat though he'd tolerate gunfire in his vicinity. His strength however was that he was one of the better cow horses I've ever been on and in all the years in the mountains he never tripped once with me on board - an endearing trait in any horse I've decided. All the best to you rockinbar and thanks again for sharing your horse photos. Dwayne

Not mine, but in a round about way I helped pay for it Pretty sure I've paid for some of his keep, too. It's been about 12 years since I've even been on a horse, but still remember some good times I had riding them. I've never owned a horse, but have ridden a few. My wife's aunt, who I've known longer than I've known my wife, has had horses for as long as I've known her and I'd go ride any time the mood hit. Used to be pretty fun to saddle up Dakota, an appy/thoroubred cross, ride out to Lake Michigan and romp around on the dunes, let him swim in the lake and then let him have his head on the beach. That sumbitch loved to run and was pretty darned fast. The only problem with running him is that he didn't want to stop. I'd be hauling on the reigns as hard as I could and he'd only gradually slow down. He always seemed to slow to a particular gait where he just pounded the hell out of his rider. He'd stay at that gait for a bit as if to punish his rider for making him stop running. She, my wife's aunt, gradually moved away from her appaloosas and quarter horses and got into Icelandics, a smaller, but sturdy horse with a very smooth gait. They seemed able to go all day and were very easy on the backside.
