In your article on hammer shotguns in Successful Hunter, there is a photo of a external hammer single barrel with a brace of birds. I have been looking for a such a shotgun; do you have any idea what make and model that one is? Thanks!

I'm not familiar with any shotgun that comes with the bagged birds:)

1. You are clearly not reading the right gun rags, look for Barsness in the by-line.
2. Some of us only get birds if they come with the shotgun, stop buying Rugers, they have crummy triggers anyway. };-)>

The photo was reproduced a little small. That was not a single-barrel shotgun, but an old hammer drilling, 12x12x.30-30, made by Sauer for the original Charles Daly importing firm.

Darn, that will not help the search. I do appreciate the reply, maybe I had better look for a hammered sxs.

Hammer guns are quite popular these days so when you find a good one, you'll likely have to pay a premium. My hammer gun is a Remington 1889 with 30" "decarbonized steel" tubes. Mine is well used and the action was loose when I got it. I tightened the action and it now shoots rather well.
I like to load 2 5/8" black powder loads and use it for opening day hunts just to be different...It's fun to see the look on people's faces when that big cloud of white smoke appears.

Thanks, not sure what I will do. Not interested in reloading, no room and no time for one more hobby, so I would prefer to shoot modern loads. Maybe I will just buy an old 311 and pretend it has hammers. It probably would not come with a brace of grouse though.

You could also buy an H&R single-shot for under $200. The hammer isn't so elegant, but it is a single-shot hammer gun.

Thanks for the suggestions. A model 1897 Winchester would work too, but I kinda like those external hammer guns. Looked again at the photo, and I can indeed see the brass under the shotgun barrel, it darn sure is there if you know what to look for. Maybe that is what I need, one gun to do it all. Yeah right...
