Don't take yourself too seriously (I need to work on that at times)!
My since passed gunsmith/mentor/BR competitor once told me that he oogled and coddled his stuff to the nth degree. Bought his own bullet making tools and fiddled with ogives, depths and neck turns. Problem was his wife went along with him with stuff he set her up with, real simple basic stuff; and beat him.....

Stick with shooting things that you don't have to work your arse off to get dressed and home.
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

Daughter and son inlaw came out yesterday and brought their new shotguns.
Had the most fun shooting that I've had in years, busting clays.
My trap thrower had been hanging in my shed for over two decades.
Gonna do this more often now! (GRIN!)

Gongs and clays to shoot so you don't have to go down range as often to pull targets. And not small steel gongs either. Kids, new shooters and even old shooters love to hear the 'ting' of steel or watch a clay shatter.
Minimize the gear you take. This goes hand in hand with the first point. No spotting scopes, or chronos. No load testing "since you're there anyway".
Shoot more 22LR because you can shoot cheaper for a longer time.

buy a 22 pistol and rifle and some golf balls My grand kids get those now. Kids are fun to watch, as the looks on their faces are priceless at times. And never get into formal competitions, very slippery slope.

I recently bought one of those 6" orange cube targets. I placed on a bare hillside at about 120 yards. With each shot it moved mostly downhill making me reacquire it in my scope. We were shooting my wife's 223 Ruger American Compact both offhand and off sticks. It was obvious when it was hit because of the movement and we had a ball. I will buy several more and spread them around a bit. They are very visible and alot lighter to carry around to place. They stood up very well to over 60 rounds of 55gr. 223 and should last quite a while. Next time I will see how they hold up to 308. They don't sound as cool as my steel gongs but are much quicker to set up and not static.

been a long time...8 years probably...my cousin and i were at the range to sight in our .22's...ended up shooting a few hundred rounds at empty shotgun hulls lined up at 25 yards...was the most fun i have had shooting since i was 10 and dad handed me my new red ryder.

Dang it mj, you beat me to it. After an hour or so of deer rifle sighting in, me and my buddy broke out the .22 rifles and had a blast! Like we was 10 again. The old 39-A's were shooting pretty damn good. What a hoot!

Yeah I love shooting clays offhand w/ my bolt action Marlin 22lr offhand. Just set em at progressively longer distances and see how far out I can go. Great field practice!

Don't get involved in the politics of shooting or if you do don't stay so long, being the go to guy that's in charge of making sure others have a good time - this will eventually suck the joy out of shooting for you!!

Quit frickin' hoarding the .22 ammunition so that people can take the kids.
