Ok, so you're sayin that batting runs in wasn't his job, hitting homers wasn't his job, not scoring runs wasn't his fault,...gotcha. What exactly DID he do to be labeled the best hitter of his era? He slapped inconsequential singles, that's what.
Rickey Henderson, who WAS his contemporary and played roughly the same number of games, scored 1000 more runs than Gwynn.

Henderson was a lead off man and a superb base stealer, perhaps the best lead off man of all time. What did he do to be considered the best hitter of his era? Well, .338 lifetime, lead the league in average how many times?
You are knocking him because there were not runners on when he hit over .300? You are knocking him because nobody brought a .300 hitter around? You ever consider the team he played on SUCKED, and yet he stayed with that some team his entire career? Take a look at the Padres team the years he played there, they weren't the Big Red Machine, or the Oakland A's.

No number 2 hitter with no power should ever be considered the best hitter of his era. It's ridiculous.
Carew batted .388 one year, Gwynn batted .394 one year. Both slap singles hitters that rarely were difference makers.
George Brett was a better hitter than either of them.

What an athlete; one of the greatest of all time. Can only imagine the eyesight on that man, the contact he was able to make 99.99% of the time was simply awesome.
Damn chew, had to beat a rough way to go.
RIP Tony, you'll be missed.

One could only imagine his numbers iffin he played for a decent organization with runners on and protection behind him. Put George Brett behind him, where do you think his runs would be? Put a Willie Wilson ahead of him as Brett had, then where do you think his RBI total would stand?

... Let's call it 7 homers and 55 RBI per season.

Hard to call Tony Gwynn a slap singles hitter when hes 28th on the all-time list (not just his generation) for doubles. His slugging average, bases per at-bat, is also almost identical with noted sluggers such as Carl Yastrzemski, Boog Powell, Willie Horton and Lee May.

Wondered who Joe Mauer was trying to emulate... Seriously, it's gotten to the point that I change the channel when Joe bats. His entire approach to hitting is flawed. A guy that is 6'5" and 230 but hits like a girl. His $200 million dollar contract may go down as the worst in history.

But he always has good at bats, challenges the pitcher, makes contact, and is one of us... lol

Gwynn played the game the right way . He hit the gaps as well as anybody ever . He could turn on one when he needed to . Watched him in batting practice a few times . He was a perfect 2 hitter . He also won multiple Gold Gloves . He also was a assist machine on the hardwood . That's what he played on scholarship . Only played Baseball in College because the team had so many injuries and one of the players on the team w he could play . I think he was All American and maybe player of the year after his second season . In a time of poor role models in the sporting world he was the anti star . Great player , Coach , Father and person . RIP Tony !
