I've been thinking about buying one with the illuminated fire-dot reticle but as I understand it, the warranty is only good for 1-year on the illuminated dot and would appreciate any first hand experiences - also, is the dot bright enough to pick out quickly?

You didn't ask about one but if you want a BRIGHT ORANGE circle, at high noon, that rivals an Eotech, then take a hard look at the SWFA Super Sniper 1-4 or 1-6

I've only had my VX 6 2-12 about six months but so far so good. The fire dot is completely adjustable from very bright which is easily seen in bright sunlight down to a very low level which you can barely see indoors but which is perfect just on dark. It is, in my not so humble opinion, the best illuminated dot I've ever used and superior to the Schmidt & Bender and Swarovski Z6 offerings.
