When you arrive in country, or back in this country, DO NOT go to the bathroom before you go through customs. Perhaps especially coming back into the states.

I'd say keep your passport with you ALL the time.

When in doubt, ask a cop for help.

don't drive, if they are on the wrong side of the road.

don't smoke pot in their country

don't get drunk enough to fall down or pass out.

It's kind of like going to NoDak, people are different there, but nice enough, if you stay out of the oil patch. grin

That right there, and as said, guard your passport.

This.

If it were Europe, I'd say watch out for the gypsies, but I don't guess they have 'em in Australia.

Side note, how about health insurance etc? What happens when you have to go into a foreign hospital to have your appendix removed?

I have to ask, why not bum around in Alaska? Think of the hunting & fishing opportunities. Godspeed regardless. Stay safe and I hope you find what you are looking for.

Read the book "Europe Through the Back Door" by Rick Steves.

Trust me, the travel tips are words to live by. A lot the info is specific to Europe but there's many tips that apply no matter where you're traveling.

I actually had oral surgery done while in Australia and various medical care in Korea.

You get a bill and send it to your own insurance provider. What they won't cover, you pay.

I think that the oral surgery cost me $19 in 1995.

The appendix or the health insurance?

Anyway, you should forget about Australia and all that passport stuff. Just cross into Mexico along some remote portion of the boarder. They will immediately give you welfare, food stamps and free healthcare at any hospital emergency room. Heck, they won't even call you an "illegal", only undocumented. In some parts of Mexico you can even get a drivers' license.

Don't yell "ALLAH AKBAR" and run to the cockpit while flying to and from Australia.
