To my knowledge all of this variant are Mark IIIs, introduced in 2008, I believe. Is there an earlier model that is similar? (16-20 inch barrel, iron sights)

I'd buy a Hawkeye in 308, have the barrel chopped, and install NECG sights. The factory rear sight on the Compact Magnums is pretty crappy anyway.
Some shooting knowledge: Don't stand in front of the muzzle. Some hunting knowledge: Too much noise ruins the hunt.

Take a knee - I'm really looking for a .308, but I appreciate the offer.
Gasman - I might end up doing just that. I already have a couple projects at the gunsmith's, but whats one more.

If you want, you would then have the option of doing it on a SS rifle.

Good luck. I was looking for the same rifle and finally gave up and bought a Ruger .338 RCM with the 20" barrel. I will just load it down for whitetail. It is such a sweet handling gun that I think it's worth the trade off. After buying some starting ammo and dies the cost of shooting it isn't too bad and I can always use it for bigger game if the opportunity ever presents itself. ( I live in a bit of a fantasy world when it comes to my firearms and the hunting that I actually do )
